This was one of those "straw that broke the camels back" moments...

It was a dumb decision.
It was a Captain's call and it was yet another wrong one.

This went to show that Abbott can not be trusted to subsume his own as particular personal proclivities as PM. Being a Monarchist he just had to bring back Knights and Dames, well that was fine as it was supposed to be limited to the position of GG. But perhaps he'd had a few the evening before with David Flint, perhaps he was on a promise or perhaps just felt some loyalty to him and the rest of the monarchists, or even to prince Philip. Who knows. But he acted on a personal whim using the power of PM of Australia, without any thought about how this decision would go down with his fellow Australians.

He was surprised at the reaction.... Really???
The question then is... just how out of touch is he with ordinary Australians? The people he is supposed to represent and make decisions for...

This was the STRAW... there have been broken promises and bad policy decisions, there is no more trust and all political good will has been used up.

I have said from the get-go that I didn't think that Tony Abbott was up to the job of being PM and absolutely nothing he has done has changed my mind. It has only re-enforced my opinion of him. He makes decisions based on his own personal prejudices either favourable or unfavourable.

Having said that, I would not vote for Turnbull either.

The Libs won office mainly for their "Stop the boats" policy but do we really know how many boats have actually been stopped and how many are still getting through?

Well he has been rather good personally overseas etc.
But on the domestic front where it really matters he's been totally out of touch and due to his office and Credlin literally so.
Also if we wanted to rid ourselves of Labor we had to vote in the Coalition... which includes him as PM... their choice of course.

I don't think Gillard had the power or authority to knight anyone. Abbott revived this elitist crap.
OMG.... you are right on this mantra there were no Knights and Dames Abbott brought them back in and Gillard did not Knight anyone.
Ok, so not technically, but the OAM is still what it is in essence, refer to the link below.

Following the 1983 election, Prime Minister Bob Hawke advised the abolition of the Knight / Dame grade. On 3 March 1986, The Queen co-signed letters patent revoking the grade of Knight and Dame; existing Knights and Dames were not affected by this change. Prime Minister Tony Abbott advised The Queen to reinstate the grade of Dame and Knight on 19 March 2014. The Queen co-signed letters patent to bring this into effect. The change was publicly announced on 25 March, and gazetted on 17 April 2014.

Same dog different spots.

At the end of the day, it's not really a big deal, though many have tried to beat it up to be.

Tell me, what's the difference between Abbott OAM'ing and knighting Prince Philip and Gillard OAM'ing an Indian cricket player?

Imperial honours were abolished by the Whitlam government over 40 years ago. Then re-introduced by the Fraser government in the late 1970s and abolished again by the Hawke Labor government in 1983.

I think with Abbott being a staunch monarchist, he's obviously felt passionate enough about it that he's reintroduced imperial honours.

And the problem is?

Is it such a big deal?

Feminists loathe it because it distinguishes the sexes of the OAM recipients, ie Dames / Sir's.

Labor hate it because they are republicans and would prefer the union Jack disappeared from our flag.

The Tony-haters hate it because they just hate Tony.

The media love it because it gives the Tony-haters a podium to keep hating Tony.

Though in essence, what difference does it make?

Did we all wake up the following morning a different Australia?

We have a staunch monarchist PM, naturally he would want to reintroduce Imperial Honours.

Gosh if this is the worst he's done, shouldn't we be shaking his hand, this opposed to lining him up alongside the bali 9?

Hahahaaaa. Knighted him, did she? You fucking loon.

Not only wasn't it a Knighthood, it was only an Honorary Membership to the Order of Australia.

And she didn't make a "captains call" to appoint him to the highest honour category. Perhaps you'd be better off bringing up the Knighting of his son, Chuck? They even had to change the rules to make that come about.

This incident just confirmed Abbott as a toadying little lickspittle, who likes to portray himself as a hard man, but only when dealing with those without power and influence. When it comes to the elite of the elite, he bows down as low as possible, and starts kissing ass.
