Turnbull hadn't been in politics long when he became opposition leader. He should get another chance. He wouldn't be perfect, but he might be the only solution at the moment. Bishop would not make a good leader. I said the same about Abbott. He's not a talker, which isn't a bad thing generally, but not for a prime minister. Turnbull is articulate and has a good business background. He is the best out of a bad lot and that includes Labor too. He appeals to the left, so he offers something to both sides.Rorschach wrote:ABC news...
Like the ALP, the Liberal Party runs the risk of killing off more than one leader next week.
And what if the replacement turns out unable to reverse the Government's fortunes? A faltering Bishop would soon be tarred with the brush of Gillard. Liberals might well ponder the embarrassment of her five months as Shadow Treasurer in 2008-09, a period that casts doubt on her leadership credentials.
Equally, a faltering Turnbull would be reminiscent of his less than stellar performance as opposition leader in 2008-09. Remember Godwin Grech? And who thinks the Liberal Party's problem with climate change will go away if Turnbull takes over?
Should Abbott step down?

Re: Should Abbott step down?
Turnbull is the worst alternative possible... in fact, he is the turncoat behind much of this nonsense.
He's still bitter about Tony being the more capable and genuine man for the job.
Turnbull is a closet socialist and cares more about his own financial gains than he does the welfare of our nation.
After Turnbulls mother died, he claimed she was of Jewish ancestry, then took it upon himself to wear a kippa as he tried to win the Jewish vote.
The mans a scoundrel, he really is.
He'd love to turn Australia into a socialist republic, and become our nations first president.
And why?
Because Turnbull has more than enough money to fund his own presidential campaign....note how most republicans are quite wealthy?
They have a god complex, and believe their worth should entitle them the top job.
Clive Palmer is another one who fancies himself worthy of purchased leadership.
Turnbull joined the wrong party, should have been a Labor man.
Abbotts doing fine, the hysteria coming from the left is merely sour grapes.

Re: Should Abbott step down?
I don't think Abbott is a good "captain" and I am no leftie. His public speaking is below par, he can't think and speak on the hop, he tends to be bit of a one man band (a bit like Rudd but not as bad), makes decisions without consultation and/or against party opinion and he is the worst person to be in front of the cameras when things go wrong . I was never keen on him leading the Liberals but apparently it was his 'due' for long service to the party.
Parties should be led by those most suited to lead and not those who have put in the time and are owed tenure. The trouble is that there is no-one on either side of politics at present that has the ability to lead with authority and instil confidence in both their party and the people.

Abbott might not be fantastic when it comes to on-the-hop media questions, but i'd rather have someone like Abbott leading the party than have someone whos media savvy with the gift of the gab who is neither genuine or productive.
I think Abbott will be in for a long time yet.

Re: Should Abbott step down?
Probably. Of course a lot of his ministers are chomping at the bit for the job, but if they follow Labor's path by changing leaders during the term, they will regret it later. Abbott is an introvert and the worst possible communicator - verbally anyway. He is a reasonable writer, but that's not going to endear him to the public. It's a gamble whether they change leaders or not.mellie wrote:I think Abbott will be in for a long time yet.

Re: Should Abbott step down?
I think we need to keep this in perspective.
Rudd & Gillard made so many mistakes, drowned refugees, pink bats, school buildings etc etc failures.
Whats Tony done to have him thrown out before he's had a reasonable crack at it?
What ever happened to giving someone a fair go?
The left and (Turnbull lovers ) extended this privilege to Rudd and Gillard, yet are willing to toss Abbott out because ,,he isn't great at public speaking?
Or don't like what he wears?
Oh pulease.

Well the 2015 Budget is due shortly and the 2014 Budget is still not resolved. That's not good.

It took several years to stuff it, Abbotts clever, but he's no superhero.Black Orchid wrote:Well the 2015 Budget is due shortly and the 2014 Budget is still not resolved. That's not good.

Rome wasn't built in a day.
Abbotts doing fine, better than expected given the deficit he inherited from Labor.

We all know the mess he inherited but he needs to find a better balance between rewarding the rich and hurting the poor in order to survive and I don't think he can.
