It was the usual PR piece where she said oil is formed on the ocean floor then gave some links. I knew her statement was bullshit—I do have a BSc in geology with a minor in Zoology—and followed one of her links and the paper she linked did NOT say what she said it did.

We have floating oil rigs because the continental shelf, that part of a continent under the sea, has oil deposits if the conditions are right for it. They are not drilling the ocean floor, the relatively thin, basaltic ocean floor that gets spewed out in the mid ocean ridges and moves until it is subducted under a continental plate, continental plates being made up of lighter, higher silicon rocks ride over the oceanic plates.

You do have to understand the difference—might have to do some reading. However, all oceanic drilling/production rigs are over continental rocks—the oceanic shelf. This includes the North Sea and the Timor Sea and the coast off Brazil, etc.

The oil under the continental shelves came from dead dinosaurs, like pretty much all oil.

No sarcasm intended, you may need to read a bit about the formation and destruction of ocean floor and the formation of oil—which needs dead animals to be covered by mud then more mud, sand etc and the pressure and heat of being deep under the ground converts the dead dinosaur bodies to oil. You also need some suitable orogeny to create places where the oil pools and cannot escape to the surface. The sea floor, as I said, is thin, keeps moving and there is no huge build up of sediments hence no oil.
