You have to Love Australia

This sort of thing I love as an article. I love to scare the shit out the POMs by showing them that Australia is too dangerous for such wimps.

Snake eats crocodile in battle at Australian lake

A snake won an epic battle against a crocodile which shocked onlookers at a Queensland lake

A snake has defeated a crocodile in an epic five-hour battle at a lake in Australia which left onlookers shocked as the python slowly devoured its prey.

The clash between a large water python and a three-foot fresh water crocodile occurred at Lake Moondarra near Mount Isa, a remote town in the north-west of the state of Queensland.

In remarkable images captured by Tiffany Corlis, a local who was watching on, the python can be seen strangling and eating the crocodile, whose outline can then be seen inside the snake.

Ms Corlis said the crocodile tried to fight but was no match for the python.

"(The crocodile) was fighting at the start, it was trying to keep its head out of water and survive,” she told ABC News. “But as the morning progressed you could tell both of them were getting a little weaker as the struggle was going on, finally the croc sort of gave in."

Ms Corlis said the onlookers were frightened but stunned by the dramatic battle. Locals said the fight lasted about five hours.

"It was just unbelievable, we were sort of thinking the snake had bitten off a little more than it could chew, pardon the pun, but it did actually eat the crocodile," she said.

"You could see the crocodile in the snake's belly which I think was probably the more remarkable thing. You could actually see its legs and see its scales and everything, it was just amazing."

A snake expert, Associate Professor Bryan Fry, from the University of Queensland, said water pythons typically targeted rodents and smaller animals, but small freshwater crocodiles were relatively easy prey. The snake would probably not need to eat again for another month but would probably “tuck itself away” because it would not have a means of defending itself, he said.

“Crocs are more dangerous to catch but easier to sneak up on,’’ he told Fairfax Media.

‘‘The problem is they are risking being injured or killed, so they have to be judicious.’’

Asked if she would swim in the lake in the future, Ms Corlis said: "I think I'll just send someone else in first."

Lost German tourist survives three weeks on a diet of insects

Disoriented by floods a German backpacker lives on insects before being rescued by police in Australia
A German backpacker survived for nearly three weeks in Australia's harsh Outback on a diet of insects, after being stranded by floods.

According to police in Australia, Daniel Dudzisz, 26, went missing in February on a walking trip south-west of Longreach in remote Queensland.

Somewhat bedraggled, he was picked up by a patrol car between Windorah and Jundah.

Mr Dudzisz - who is diabetic and insulin-dependent - told police he waded through the floods and ate flies to survive his ordeal.

"If you hadn't heard it with your own ears - and my officers have - you certainly wouldn't believe it," Inspector Mark Henderson told the Australian Broadcasting Corporation.

"He joked about never going hungry in the Australian Outback because of the amount of flies you can eat for their protein apparently."

The German had been walking through New South Wales and Queensland for several months and kept in regular contact with police.

But when he set off from Windorah on February 17 heading to Jundah, about 50 miles away he got lost his way was stranded between two flooded areas of the Barcoo River.

"He had some baked beans and cereal when he left Windorah and exhausted that pretty quickly, and said he'd been eating flies ever since," Insp Henderson said

Aerial and ground searches were launched when the German tourist failed to reach Jundah.

"He certainly was hungry, but other than that he was in reasonable spirits," Henderson said.

Mr Dudzisz told police he was determined to continue his walk to Australia's Northern Territory.

See, I don't mind all the dangerous critters down there. Sure, you people basically live on what I'm certain is the prototype for a Warhammer 40,000 deathworld (true, G.W. even made Deathworld Australis canon back in 3rd Ed), but you have to remember that most of the critters are fairly rare and/or real damn easy to avoid. The problem is, well, the sheer fucking number of creatures down there that can potentially kill the absolute shit out of a human. Seriously, you have the top three most venomous land snakes all on one continent. One of you guys must've pissed of God or something.

I'd rather have the snake for a pet than a Chihuahua.

Yappy little things only suitable for stuck up girls with handbags and highly effeminate men.
