Tariffs are used by nations to tax incoming goods primarily, but the secondary purpose of any import tariff scheme is to protect native industry in order to make it more competitive vs imported goods. By lowering import tariffs, Australia made it such that foreign auto manufacturers could undercut Holden's price point after having gone through the additional expense of transporting their goods into Australian markets.

In other words, you dumbfucks killed a key part of what little heavy industry you have remaining (Seriously, it's almost like you people have no idea what the term "strategic asset" means) by allowing foreign companies to sell their goods in your markets for less cost than your native companies could achieve.

The best part is we almost did the exact same thing ourselves back in the 1970s and into the 1980s, just barely pulling our heads out of our asses before the Japanese could lay down the coup de grace on Ford, Chrystler, and GM. Instead of heeding our example, instead, in your mad rush to be just like us, you skipped the head-out-of-ass part and went ahead and killed off Holden as a viable Australian auto manufacturer.

At this point I would not at all be surprised if you guys just left Holden's manufacturing facilities to rust away instead of mothballing them for future use like we did with the entire Rust Belt.
