I think America is a sick society.
Europe has learned that if you don't look after the whole community/society then the right wing extremes start to take hold. I have never understood why they cannot afford or want to afford the right to life via a universal healthcare system. The more wealthy can pay for a better service than the minimum as we do in Europe or Australia.
The fact that the US doesn't recognise is that capitalism's success has been underpinned in that it is used to fund an element of the welfare state everywhere else in the west. They resist this for ideological reasons. Even from the Roman times they realised the masses need to basics of life to keep it all working. When they are not there is always a revolution or a breakdown of the society.
When I go to the US and I am there next week, I see a society where if you have money you are fine. If you fall on hard times you may as well just die. It is this aspect I don't like the most.
I like the quotes from "Killing Them Softly" that sums it up for me.
"I live here in America. And in America, you're on your own."
"America's not a country. It's a business."

Europe has gone the other end of the extreme.
That's why they are broke.

I agree that some of Europe has done that.
The welfare state can only work if it can be afforded. The books must balance.
If the money for the state needs to reduce then the welfare state must reduce. The size of government must reduce.
Funny, some call that austerity. I think of it as a correction after labour type government have gone a little too far during the good times and it needs to be reined in.
however, the basics are maintained. If you need to go to hospital for an operation... you can anywhere outside of the US in the west. (you may have to queue tho)

Wait, what?
Havn't you right wing nut jobs been telling us the US is hocked up to the eyeballs, and can't survive unless they cut spending to the bone?
So both extremes are broke

Yes. Have you been living in the real world?
Only the one to the right has any chance of paying down their credit card by themselves. The ones to the left will never learn their lesson and will rely on handouts from the IMF etc until they go to the wall.

I think the west will not let any of the countries fail that have followed in most part the US doctrine because they are too big to fail.
This could be delaying an even bigger crash.
However free enterprise driven by market supply and demand requires failures to work. While we bailout banks and countries we are putting the whole ideology at risk opening the way for extreme right or left winged alternatives. Corrections by letting those who have mismanaged their part of the economy to fail is a central aspect of the basics.
We are heading for a major correction.

Shots have been fired outside the US Capitol. Hopefully congressmen were killed.

Is there such a thing as a double dissolution in the US or similar? Would the Democrats have a chance of getting re-elected if there was a new election called?

Elections can't be called. If they could the GOP would be out.
