Incoming foreign affairs minister Julie Bishop says she is confident the Coalition will be able to implement all of its asylum seeker policies regardless of how Indonesia views them.

Indonesia's foreign minister Marty Natelegawa recently rejected the Coalition's plan to purchase boats from Indonesian fishermen in a bid to prevent people smugglers buying them.

The policy is part of Operation Sovereign Borders, the Coalition's regional action plan against people smuggling which was announced during the federal election campaign.

Ms Bishop has told Sky News she will leave for meetings at the United Nations in New York on Saturday and will talk to Dr Natalegawa while she is there.

"What we have in place is a series of policies that we intend to implement by legislation and operationally, and they will not breach Indonesia's sovereignty," she said.

"We're not asking for Indonesia's permission, we're asking for their understanding.

In a nutshell, Indonesia as a country will feel it has lost face. How it responds will be unpredictable. But once an Indonesian has lost face, little will be logical viewed from our western perspective. Julie Bishop and Tony Abbott have a lot of work to do. A hell of a lot more than a civil cup of tea between PMTA and SBY. Our diplomats in Jakarta will be absolutely distraught at the moment. JB will have experienced the civil service equivalent of a thorough bollocking last week.

It’s just as well the wet season is looming. Otherwise, the floodgates on new boat arrivals might just have opened. Very easy and quick revenge for Indonesia, with no domestic impact in Australia, and serious political impact on our new Government.

All that hard bi-lateral work behind the scenes to stop the boats from the Indonesian end down the drain…..

Neo-colonialist - I like that word. Rudd's PNG solution is starting to kick in - but on principle it looks like Abbott would rather implement his gangster approach even if he upsets the Indonesians. How much is this going to cost - as well as the cost of dismantling Rudd's solution? PNG will have to be paid off first and then there's the buildings into which millions have been poured. What's he going to do with those?

It seems Susan Ley might have some talent. So, naturally, she is kept out of cabinet. I wonder for how long? Six months?

One other source of tension: Malcolm Turncoat. If he doesn’t roll out #Fraudband he will be hated across the whole fucking political spectrum, from the inner city to the remotest outpost! If he does try and rollout #Fraudband he is in for a whole world of pain, the copper being in such a state a huge study needs to be done to build a database of what wires serve what premise and what state those wires are in (like rotten or sound, a proper pair or one made from two failed pairs, etc) and then deliver no more than “up to 25mbps” for some.

Turncoat would enter a whole world of pain.

His best option by far would be to accelerate the NBN rollout but the simian won’t let him do that. Anybody who thinks Turncoat would tamely accept this is an idiot and should not be on this board.
