Coalition rejects Labor criticism over policy costings; Abbott says voters can 'do the arithmetic'

The Coalition has fended off Labor attacks over its decision not to commit to its own budget bottom line when it releases its policy costings, with Opposition Leader Tony Abbott saying voters will be "able to do the arithmetic".

Opposition treasury spokesman Joe Hockey has again confirmed the Coalition will not provide a final budget figure because he does not trust the Treasury numbers used by the Government.

"We've been using the independent Parliamentary Budget Office to assist us, as well as other sources to assist us in helping to make sure that our numbers are far more robust than anything Labor has had," Mr Hockey told the ABC's AM program.

Mr Abbott has confirmed the Opposition will not release a final figure.

"What we'll be doing in the campaign is we will be fully funding and fully costing all of our commitments and the budget bottom line will be better under the Coalition than under the Labor Party," Mr Abbott said.

"You'll be able to see, you'll be able to do the arithmetic and you will see that the budget bottom line will be better under the Coalition than under Labor."

RBA just cut the cash rate by 25 basis points to 2.5%.

Won’t hurt the govt tho the stupid Libs tried to make it look bad. Idiots!

Govt needs to borrow big and do major infrastructure:

Finish the NBN
Repair/upgrade rail lines, build new lines as appropriate.
Work on ports, second Sydney airport etc.

We can borrow cheap, good time to employ thousands of workers and build great infrastructure.

Not that it is a new tax, for starters!

The taxes collected from smokers go nowhere near covering the huge expense of looking after smokers as emphysema and cancer (of lips, mouth, trachea, lungs and bowels) rob smokers first of quality of life then of life. Loss of productivity, medical costs, the terrible toll on family of the smoker etc etc.

If you smoke, you need to stop! The way to do that is to cut down on the number of smokes while you find a motivation to quit. Find the right motivation and stopping smoking will be easy, patches and fake cigarettes not needed. Said motivation should not be health—obsess about the health effects of smoking and you find you have increased your rate of smoking. Anyway, my reformed smoker spiel for the day.
Monk is lying again and says Yay! to any new ALP tax

And if that doesn't float your boat, at least we have palmer in for the light entertainment. He is all over the tv in WA and I imagine QLD too. Do you get much of him in the rest of the country?
Yes, locally only at the moment.

I live right in his Electorate, (Fairfax) and tomorrow night, I'll be attending a function as his Guest.....well, that's not entirely true, because the tight arse would not shout the accommodation, even though I did get a pretty decent discount. But, I will be drinking his grog, eating his food, even at the same table as he, and I will also pick up a birthday gift for darko.

I'll report back on that.
Last night was informative. I saw all the 'short' TV ads which have been prepared and time slots already paid for. Palmer is confident of grabbing some seats, and I rate him and PUP Candidate Bill Schoch a chance in the two Sunshine Coast seats of Fairfax and Fisher respectively. The PUP has a very visible presence all over the Coast, and I reckon if the right ammunition is fired at Brough at the right time, Schoch might just shock. Clive himself has a nobody ALP opponent and a Brisbane lobbyist Brisbane blow-in LNP rival. The Coast is blue ribbon Liberal Country but the gloss has been lost with the Slipper/Ashby/Brough scandal (about which there is more to come when the Ashby Appeal decision is given....) and if some stuff I am highly suspicious about gets to proof, should see the end of Brough politically in Fisher, probably handing Bill Schoch (a Bundy Boy like me) a Bradbury.

Clive's task in Fairfax is not impossible, given Alex Somlyay, the long standing LNP Member is retiring, leaving a legacy of sweet fuck all. He never needed to deliver to hold the seat, and he didn't, although it must be acknowledged that his golf handicap improved. I am unaware of any special potential Clive might have to swing things his way, but he does have a commanding local presence. He is all over the Media here.

The thing is... in today's world low interest rates are a sign of an economy with problems... the ALP have been in denial about this for a very long time.

Can someone provide a crisp statement of the real issues that the Australia electorate will be considering.

What are the punters really worried about?

Is this election about who is the most fiscally responsible, who makes the biggest promises.....?

What are the real issues? Sorry, I cannot tell through the noise and partisan posts.
