Florida, which you may remember is governed by famous asshole Rick Scott, recently voted to ban all Internet Cafes. And the Bill? Well... Take a look.

The problem stems from the fact that those writing the Bill have absolutely no idea what they're talking about. The Bill is so poorly worded, stating that it in fact outlaws any "system or network of devices" one could use in a game of chance. You know, like everything with internet access.

In April Florida Governor Rick Scott approved a ban on slot machines and Internet cafes after a charity tied to Lt. Governor Jennifer Carroll was shut down on suspicion of being an Internet gambling front -- forcing Carroll, who had consulted with the charity, to resign.

Florida's 1,000 Internet cafes were shut down immediately, including Miami-Dade's Incredible Investments, LLC, a café that provides online services to migrant workers, according to the Tampa Bay Times.

The owner, Consuelo Zapata, is now suing the state after her legal team found that the ban was so hastily worded that it can be applied to any computer or device connected to the Internet, according to a copy of the complaint obtained by The Miami Herald.

The ban defines illegal slot machines as any "system or network of devices" that may be used in a game of chance.

I do, to an extent. I have a lot of American friends and have spent a lot of time there. I have no idea about Florida though except that a friend of my sister's lived there for awhile and found 2 alligators in her back yard ready to eat her dogs. Because the state of Florida is entirely staffed by incompetent dickheads who actually follow poorly worded statutes to the letter. Under the wording of the ban ANY system or network of devices that can be use for gambling is illegal, regardless of what those systems and devices are actually used for. This means not just internet cafes are illegal under this law, but so are personal computers, smart phones, along with the internet and any device that can connect to it.

While there are a few places where internet cafes could still be a viable business, the problem is anywhere where you find few people with their own computers and internet access also tend to be the sort places you wouldn't want to operate a small business in.

It is also entirely inaccurate. PA has a long history of focusing on international politics, with some of the most interesting discussions being around US domestic issues such as this. It is only relatively recently (perhaps beginning around the time of Latham?) that it has devolved entirely into inane prattle about leadership and polls.

So please ignore the peanuts and carry on. Rick Scott has achieved the impossible by making Jeb Bush look reasonable and in-touch. It is horrifying to think that this state, populated entirely by the senile and deranged, holds 29 college votes and the final say in most federal elections.



In any event. Good luck to them in their attempt to drive gambling off the Internet and back onto the boardwalks and streets of Miami, where it belongs.
