Bill is in the mail - time to pay carbon tax piper
* by: Greg Hunt

THIS week Rose, an elderly caller to the Ray Hadley Program on 2GB, broke down in tears over the massive increase in her latest electricity bill.

It was only the goodwill of a listener who offered to pay her bill that allowed her to keep her electricity on.

As residents right across Sydney and NSW are discovering, Rose's pain is also their pain. The Labor goons tried the sky's not falling trick 3 months ago, but it is only now after 3 months that we will be starting to see the effects in our bills.

Electricity bills are just beginning to land in letterboxes and, according to the NSW regulator, most people will receive an 18 per cent increase on top of major increases in recent years. And most of the increases so far have also been related to the Labor Green policies. With feedback tariffs for solar and other infrastructure imposts in the lead-up to the carbon tax impacting our bills.

At a time of electricity stress, it is important to expose three great myths about the carbon tax. The first great myth is that everyone else around the world is introducing a carbon tax. They're not.

Let's take New Zealand. I've just returned from Wellington, meeting with ministers, officials and business leaders and the truth about what New Zealand is doing is very different to that which Julia Gillard would have us believe.

In short, our carbon tax is 15 times higher than in New Zealand. The Australian carbon tax is $23 a tonne. In New Zealand the real payment to the government is only $A1.46 or less than 1/15 of the cost in Australia.

New Zealand's business, community and parliamentary leaders were very clear that they were not about to impose an electricity tax on their people. Their reasoning was that jobs would simply go to China and global emissions would probably just go up.

As a consequence, New Zealand is about to pass a largely non-controversial legislation to slow down its emissions trading system.

Second, the Prime Minister says that the electricity price rises are not because of the tax.

Sadly, as the NSW regulator has made clear, the bulk of your electricity price rise will be coming from the carbon tax. In western Sydney alone, 80 per cent of price rises are coming from the carbon tax.

Worse, this is just the first year of the carbon tax with the price set to rise each year every year from $23 a tonne now to $350 a tonne by 2050.

The third myth is that the carbon tax actually makes a difference. It doesn't.

The government's own figures show that Australia's emissions go up from 578 million tonnes to 621 million tonnes a year from 2010 to 2020. That's because, like Rose, we all need electricity.

People tighten their belts - but they still have to light their homes and cook their food. So, for a big financial cost, there is no environmental gain.

When next you open your electricity bill, not only will you see how much the carbon tax is costing you, you'll also receive a taxpayer-funded brochure as part of the government's $70 million advertising campaign.

What this brochure won't tell you is that the single biggest cause of the price rise this year is the carbon tax. It doesn't work and nobody else in the world is doing anything remotely comparable, least of all the canny New Zealanders.

I was pleasantly surprised when I got my quarterly electricity bill. It had only jumped by about $20.00, although I used a little less electricity by being more careful.

Are these horror stories true? Perhaps people are unwittingly using more electricity? Obviously the way to keep it down is to reduce your usage.

I stayed with the same energy company and they offered me 12.5% discount for a 2 year contract. Most of the other suppliers have had similar deals on offer.

"What this brochure won't tell you is that the single biggest cause of the price rise this year is the carbon tax."

How are politicians allowed to get away with such lies. It just is amazing.

Breaking News: Hideous grinning terrorist holds Australian govt and people to ransom. Demands govt introduce radical laws that suit a extemist minority but will damage the living standards of all Australians.

Gillard govt rolls over and gives into the terrorists in return for at least $40-50 million dollars

Yes SN politicans lying is a real problem, none bigger than this one... There will be no Carbon tax under the government I lead... now that was a doozy.

The cost of electricity in NSW has gone up over the last 6 years due to Labor policy and preparation for the ETS/carbon tax and associated Green policies. No lie in that.

I have been told by an unreliable source that "State govt charges are the main cause of electricity rate rises! Pensioners, the poor etc are compensated and even overcompensted for any increase due to the carbon price." Any truth in what this source has claimed?

You will find that the ALP will spin the line that it's "poles and wires" infrastructure that is responsible for large increases.

The truth is that it is all "green" dickheadedness that is responsible for the massive increases.

The "poles and wires" furphy is a cunningly disguised red herring where the subsidies from the power companies to those that have environmentally unfriendly useless solar panels are classified as such - and the rest of society pays for those rich enough to get the kickback.

Just imagine $10Bn+ spent on similar green shitstank courtesy of the Greens psychopaths - green psychobabble leftwing pansy fucking retard bullsit should NEVAH be involved in commercial and commodity arrangements. We have seen the results from the ALP and Greens with the CT and livestock. I see the fed ALP are now about to kill the stone fruit industry with another knee jerk reaction...courtesy of Ludwig jnr who is Daddy's little fucking helper in destroying Australia...fucking dickhead

Christine Milne, Ludwig are a c unts of the highest order. Both are fuckwits who wouldn't be missed if they dropped off the face of the earth

Not a lot.
Dividends have been taken from Electricity Utilities since Greiner in the 70s.
I'm poor, I know that the so-called compensation I received was gone after 1 bill, no more compensation till next year now.
The tax break will only benefit those better off who are employed. No one else. So the very poor and unemployed are screwed.

What you regurgitated was Labor spin. I remember when Labor and the Greens were telling us that only the big polluters would be affected. Then they decided to change lots of things to try and COMPENSATE us for what they were about to do. It would appear they are clueless. Today there are more defaults on bill payments than ever before and this will only get worse.
