In short:

Russell Brand has taken the stand in his trial, telling the jury he could not convince any friends to defend him.

The 51-year-old entertainer has denied charges of rape, sexual assault and indecent assault.

The trial continues.



The 51-year-old is accused of committing the crimes against six women in the United Kingdom between 1999 and 2009.

Mr Brand has pleaded not guilty to all counts and maintains he never took part in non-consensual sexual activity.

The prosecution has previously told the jury the six women did not know each other and came forward independently after seeing allegations about Mr Brand in a documentary and news articles.


Brand admits being 'promiscuous' but denies having goals with women
He told the jury he was "extremely promiscuous" when he was younger, and at the time of the alleged offending, but denied claims, made by a witness earlier in the trial, that he had a goal of sleeping with 5,000 women in his lifetime.

Under cross examination, prosecutor Riel Karmy-Jones KC put to Mr Brand that he was not prepared to leave any situation with a woman "without some sort of conquest".

"The way that's been characterised is so nefarious, unpleasant and ugly, that it's difficult to answer in earnest,"  he replied.
