What Tech do you have

I phone
Computers
Dash cam in all three cars ( get one they are worth it)
GPS in all cars and boat, plus I have a Garmin hand held GPS
My watch is an ABC watch, altimiter, barometer, compass and it tell the time, but it also resets itself when its in a country that has an atomic clock, we dont have one in Australia.
It also recharges the battery by solar panels in the face.
Several Bluetooth toys, and tools.
Canon cameras, SLR
Depth sounder/ fish finder/ GPS in boat
Underwater camera on a lead, for the boat.
Printers, recorders, etc, etc.
Mig, tig and arc welders and many many tools.

But I also like the simple things
I have many mechanical clocks
I build wooden mechanical clocks for a hobbie
That is the whole mechanism is wood, gears, escapement, the works.
My favourite took me 4 months to build, but it keeps good time.

Tech is good, but so are the simple things

I love the sound of the ticking.
But my youngest gets annoyed when all the chimes go off at the same time.
Honestly though, you don't really notice the chimes after a while
Its just like background noise.

But if one runs Down or stops, you really notice.

My wooden ones are just beautiful to watch
They have fully exposed mechanisms
I have polished each of the gears to make them beautiful
More like artwork than clocks.

I also have a lovely antique grandfather clock that has been in the family for generations. Unfortunately it's not working at present. I should get it looked at but I can't find the key.

My dad used to have to get it fixed semi regularly when it stopped but mum didn't like the chiming so they just left it last time it stopped. There doesn't seem to be anyone around who actually has the knowledge to fix it properly.

Clocks ticking are like living things
If you don't have the key you can easily purchase one.
But before you do
Most owners keep the key in the clock
Usually in with the pendulum, sometimes on a hook inside the case.

If, after you wind it it doesn't start, give the pendulum a very light touch, don't swing it, just a light bump.
If it still doesn't start, it may be unlevel or the escapement may have moved when it run down, they do that.
You might need a locksmith to look at it, they will come to your home.

Finally, most mechanical clocks need servicing every 5 to 7 years.
Normally it's just a clean and oil, but sometimes the bearings wear.

Do not try to oil it yourself
Its a bit of an art, and only very specific places are oiled and even then only the tiniest amount of oil.
Never put oil on the gears, they are meant to be dry, oil only collects dirt and dust resulting in a gummed up clock.

Clocks are beautiful.
The ticking is a restful sound and the chimes a joy.
