Tricked by tomatoes at Woolys

Post by Bobby » Wed Apr 03, 2024 4:04 pm

I got tricked by some tomatoes I bought at Woolworths.

They were the best tomatoes I had ever tasted and were expensive at $21.42 per kilo.
I bought a small punnet of them.
They were much larger than a 50 cent piece - not small cherry tomatoes.
The flavor was strong and delightful and the skins were thin
and they were not watery like so many tomatoes I've tried before.
I thought - why not grow some of my own from the seeds?
I saved 5 seeds and a friend of mine grew them for me a year or so later.

Guess what? -
they must have been hybrid tomatoes as they didn't breed true.
They must have been cross pollinated with another variety.
What came out were tiny cherry tomatoes with
thick skins that didn't taste very good.

Only what's known as heirloom tomatoes will give
exactly the same tomatoes from their seeds.
Oh well - I should have known the growers would
protect their special high cost tomatoes from copy cats - LOL

I would not pay $21/kg for tomatoes.

Neither would I normally but I was intrigued to find out why they cost so much?

Genetically modified by the sounds of them. They probably put some sweeteners in as well.
Farmers across Europe are forced to purchase seed for crops that are modified for producing just one crop only.
Thus forcing the farmers to keep buying from the big Companies for each crop.
Seedless watermelon anyone? It has a very bland taste too.

Dunno.

Disclaimer -
I realise that what I have said is not scientific
because even a bee from the next door neighbors place could
put foreign tomato pollen onto the flowers.

It's nothing to do with being genetically modified, it's just that this is common behaviour for plants grown from seed saved from plants that themselves are hybrids. Plants grown from seeds obtained from hybrids would produce a mixture of tomatoes, with the characteristics from 2 of the original plant's parents. When you collect seed from hybrid plants they often revert to a stronger parent of that plant or regress further in the plant's ancestry. Seedlings from hybrid tomato seeds frequently end up being cherry tomatoes as cherry tomatoes are disease resistant and are often the dominant parent.

Yes - they must have been hybrid tomatoes.

Tomato season is upon us soon.
It's time to get proper heirloom tomatoes that will grow the same as their parents -
not hybrid tomatoes that are from seeds of tomatoes you buy in the shop.

here:

https://www.succeedheirlooms.com.au/hei ... mato-seeds

Welcome to Succeed Heirlooms, an Australian online seed store offering a wide range of traditional, open-pollinated heirloom vegetable seeds, flower seeds and herb seeds. None of our seeds are genetically modified or treated with chemicals and their quality is always guaranteed. You can order seeds below using our online catalog which also contains extensive tips on how to grow most of the varieties offered.

Please Note: Due to quarantine regulations we are unable to post seeds to WA, TAS or outside of Australia.

Look at some of them:
