The idea of tiny accumulated changes in the genome leading eventually to new species has been undergoing a revolution, a genetics revolution:

Knowledge of genetics was pretty slight when Darwin wrote The Origin of Species

His competition seeing the changes survive in a population or not are sound enough tho.
