Triple bypass surgery

Post by mellie » Thu Feb 06, 2025 9:26 am

Wow what incredible times we live in, whereby a lifelong friend of yours can have high quality and safe surgery in a country like Australia.

My friend woke up ( thought he was having an asthma attack) at 4am in the morning and screaming out to our daughter he thought he was drowning.
She called an ambulance, it was there within 3 minutes, and he was in hospital within another 3 minutes.

Very impressive.

Angiogram the next morning, and then a day to determine which hospital had availability first, either Royal Melbourne or Geelong, got transferred same day as Angiogram to tertiary hospital for surgery today

Will be fine.

God is good.

I might insist he stays at our house for post surgical recovery, he doesn't need our grandaughter ( age7) jumping all over him. Lol

At least for a few weeks so I can monitor his vitals and legs for fluid.

Have any of you known someone you care about have bypass surgery?

He can't drive for 3 weeks afterwards, so I will need to take him to cardiac re-hab and specialist appointments.

He's also diabetic.

Surgeries postponed for a week, they want to ensure his lungs are functioning optimally. Left lung had filled with fluid, so they want to resolve this first. Fair enough.

For those of you wondering, this is my first husband. Not my most recent ex- partner.

Not my most recent ex partnership which ended in 2017.

How old is he? Was he physically active and what was his mental state before the episode? Is he a smoker?

10-year survival: More than 75% of people survive 10 years after a coronary artery bypass
14-year survival: The 14-year survival rate for three-vessel disease is 34.2%
20-year survival: The 20-year survival rate is around 40%
30-year survival: The 30-year survival rate is around 15

Older patients have a higher risk of mortality.
Diabetes and other health conditions, such as hypertension and kidney diseases increase risk factor.

I have problem with suppressed immunity because of RA medications so they hold me up for nearly a month then decided not to risk infection with open cut and put 2 stents into me instead.

They've put back his surgery till Friday, kidneys aren't functioning properly so..

Otherwise in good spirits.

No RA fortunately, if he behaves himself, and I think he will after this, he could easily live another 30+ years, as longevity is increasing all the time with new procedures, medicines etc.

RA makes everything hard , even getting sick.
πŸ™„
But at least his immune system is good, no RA, ( unlike us) so we are all cautiously optimistic.

Has quit the fags since last week following heart attack

His mental state was agitated and irritable and irrational in the weeks leading up, he was also a bit depressed, melancholic, which was out of character, for him.

Currently happy as Larry enjoying room service in private room, nice food, entertainment at his fingertips and having laughs with staff.

So he's in good spirits, despite the nature of the surgery he's having on Friday. Fingers 🀞.

I hope they don't change the date again.

He doesn't seem to mind though, is enjoying a good rest from our eldest daughter πŸ˜†

I told him to hurry up and get back on deck as fast as possible though, I am very busy traversing between two houses, school drop off's ( my daughter and grandaughter) dancing classes have doubled. Only rest day I get is Sunday, and then I go to church, take us all to Geelong hospital, then the girls swimming afterwards to cheer them up, so it's pretty hectic, my eldest daughter doesn't drive and she has a hefty schedule re- after school extra curriculars for my grandaughter, similar to the ones my daughter has too.

But slowly getting there πŸ˜€

My youngest daughter ( 12) became quite upset when she saw him in hospital wired up to everything on Sunday, tried her best to mask her tears, but out they came when she began playing with uncle Micks hair. But she came good, and gave him a big hug and shoulder massage, while my grandaughter massaged his feet ...they were wonderful little nurses, both of them, so I took them swimming after the hospital visit to make sure that hospital visits are positive for them in some way.

First year after the operation will be critical, there will be mental changes as well as physical.
