CDC and FDA recommend US pause use of Johnson & Johnson's Covid-19 vaccine over blood clot concerns

Del Rio added that the blood clotting may be connected to how the Johnson & Johnson vaccine is an adenovirus vector vaccine -- the same type as AstraZeneca's coronavirus vaccine.
The AstraZeneca vaccine isn't in use in the United States, but has been authorized in more than 70 countries. The European Medicines Agency recently concluded that unusual blood clots with low blood platelets should be listed as "very rare side effects" of the AstraZeneca vaccine. While advising the public to look out for the signs of clots, the regulators said the benefits of the shot were still worth the risk.
"The adenovirus vector vaccine may have something to do with it," del Rio said. The two other Covid-19 vaccines authorized for emergency use in the United States -- Pfizer's and Moderna's -- are mRNA vaccines, which are a different type.
He added that he still recommends people to get vaccinated against Covid-19.

Covid-19: US agencies call for pause in Johnson & Johnson vaccine

US health authorities are calling for a pause in the use of the Johnson & Johnson Covid-19 vaccine, after reports of extremely rare blood clotting cases.
The Food and Drug Administration (FDA) said it was acting "out of an abundance of caution".
It said six cases of severe blood clotting had been detected in more than 6.8 million doses of the vaccine.
The recommendation follows similar rare cases in the AstraZeneca vaccine, which has prompted some curbs in its use.
In a series of tweets, the FDA said it and the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC) were reviewing "six reported US cases of a rare & severe type of blood clot in individuals after receiving the vaccine. Right now, these adverse events appear to be extremely rare".
"We are recommending a pause in the use of this vaccine out of an abundance of caution," it said.
This was to "ensure that the health care provider community is aware of the potential for these adverse events".
A joint statement from the FDA and CDC clarified that the blood clotting was cerebral venous sinus thrombosis (CVST).
It said that this type of blood clot needed a different treatment than usual.
The common treatment - an anticoagulant drug called heparin - "may be dangerous", it said and an alternative was required.
All six cases were in women aged between 18 and 48, with symptoms six to 13 days after vaccination.
The New York Times quoted officials as saying one woman had died and a second, in Nebraska, was in a critical condition.

Re: Johnson & Johnson's vax also causes blood clots
My first instinct was to wait and see how well the vaccine was received and what side effects may occur before considering it. My current antibodies cemented that logic for me. Even so, I'm young and healthy enough that I have never feared the disease. If I were diabetic or elderly, I may have considered the vaccine as my parents did. Even my 89 year old mother in law with congestive heart failure took the Pfizer jabs and seems to be doing well. I'm happy to be in the position I am in now and I don't plan to change my position any time soon. My last positive antibody test was 3/31/21. My first covid symptoms were 7/24/20.
I'm still concerned about the possibilities of an auto immune condition that may take a year or two after the jabs to show up. I have the luxury, so I intend to wait it out. I think we'll be at herd immunity within 4-6 months. They keep talking about all of the thousands and thousands of new cases every day. The VAST majority of those cases will be contributing to herd immunity.

When this first hit back in March 2020, I suggested that we let the disease run it's course. We should protect our vulnerable and everybody take every precaution they see fit. People will die, but almost all of them made their choices about how to protect themselves. People are dying anyway and too many are expecting Mother Grubberment to be responsible for their health. Mother Grubberment will err on the side of violating rights before they will take the blame for the pandemic.Bobby wrote: ↑Wed Apr 14, 2021 7:21 amYes - auto immune disease may affect millions of people -Texan wrote: ↑Wed Apr 14, 2021 5:21 amMy first instinct was to wait and see how well the vaccine was received and what side effects may occur before considering it.
