A coronavirus cluster at a Melbourne meat works has ballooned to 71, as Victorians hold out hope of the winding down of some lockdown rules.
Victoria’s tally went up to 1467 on Friday with 13 new cases.
Of those, eight came from the Cedar Meats facility, raising the number of cases in the cluster to 71, Police Minister Lisa Neville said.
Among the coronavirus infections linked to the abattoir are a student at Marcellin College, a worker at Doutta Galla Aged Care in nearby Footscray, a nurse from nearby Sunshine Hospital, and a WorkSafe inspector.
Five other WorkSafe team members who came into contact with the inspector are self-isolating and the aged-care home will be closed until May 11.
There were 117 active cases of COVID-19 in Victoria on Friday.
Twenty thousand coronavirus tests were done on Thursday, bringing the total tests in a two-week blitz to 127,000.
“It is what is going to help us make some decisions over the next couple of days leading into Monday,” Ms Neville said on Friday.

Ok.
So cooking the meat kills the virus.
But what about the packaging the meat is transported in?

https://www.smh.com.au/politics/victori ... 54r78.htmlThe Age has confirmed that the April 8 flight from Wuhan to Sydney was not a government-to-government arrangement, but privately arranged by a consortium of Chinese-Australian businessmen, including a meat trader connected with Cedar Meats, the Victorian abattoir at the centre of the state's largest COVID-19 outbreak.
Australian Border Force confirmed on Friday that it was still investigating the cargo of a charter flight from Shanghai-based Suparna Airlines and whether it complied with the requirements of the Therapeutic Goods Administration.
The Victorian government confirmed eight more cases of COVID-19 connected to the Cedar Meats abattoir on Friday, bringing the total number of infections to 71.
One of the key players in the April 8 flight from Wuhan, Australian-based red meat trader Eddie Zhi, told The Age he supplied the Melbourne meat company with 2000 face masks sourced from his Chinese network at the same time he bought 35 tonnes of mutton from Cedar Meats to send back on the return flight.
The timing of Mr Zhi’s delivery of face masks to Cedar Meats’ abattoir, based in the Melbourne suburb of Brooklyn, coincided with the first positive test result in one of its workers on April 2.

Re: Does Victorian meat have the VIRUS ?
That is a problem.
If someone touches contaminated packaging then touches their nose or mouth
the virus would be transferred to them.
Also - a package frozen away could have viable virus on it forever.

Four new COVID-19 cases linked to Victorian abattoir
The New Daily 2:03pm, May 9, 2020 Updated: 2:33pm, May 9

The COVID-19 outbreak at Cedar Meats is Victoria's worst.
Victoria’s number of confirmed coronavirus cases has risen again, with with four of the ten new cases linked to an outbreak at the Cedar Meats facility.
The news comes as Victorians wait to learn what freedoms will return after the weekend.
Premier Daniel Andrews is expected to make an announcement on lifting restrictions on Monday, but has been careful to say the pandemic is not over.
Victoria’s coronavirus tally is a 1477, with just over 100 of those being active cases.
“Let’s not give everything back, let’s not throw away all the progress we have made by letting our frustration get the better of us,” Mr Andrews said Friday.
Dan Andrews, 5:34 PM - May 8, 2020
"We’ll be doing a lot of work over the weekend to process all the tests and consider all the data off the back of that.
I'll update you in full on Monday about what it all means for our state – what will change and what the timeframes will be."
The current restrictions remain in place until then – and I trust everyone will keep doing the right thing over the weekend.
We’ve come so far and Victorians have given so much.
Now is not the time to throw it all away because our frustrations got the better of us.
He will announce changes on Monday – the day the state of emergency lifts – but warned social distancing rules would remain at the end of May.
He is considering the national “menu” of changes available to states after Prime Minister Scott Morrison unveiled a three-step plan to reopen Australian society and the economy.

Under stage one of the plan agreed by national cabinet, cafes, restaurants and shops are permitted to reopen, with public gatherings of up to 10 people allowed.
Police Minister Lisa Neville has urged organisers to cancel two protests planned for Sunday in the city, as they are breaches of the lockdown rules.

There are no "good" reasons to be vegetarian ... Veg Nazis and vegan fundamentalists are evil ... They should let lentils and mung beans live in peace
