On a recent visit to Romania, I was shocked to face the cruel reality of bears held in captivity. I'd like to share with you my experience with Ursula, one of the bears I met there. Ursula is an Asiatic Black Bear and has lived day and night for 26 years in a dirty, rusty cage just a few metres square. Distressed, malnourished and unable to express any natural behaviour, this cruel confinement has resulted in real signs of mental torment for this majestic animal.

She paced round and round in circles in her tiny cage at the private zoo, with no protection from the freezing snow or the burning sun. The floor of her cage was completely bare apart from a small pool of filthy, stagnant water. I couldn't believe it when I was told this was all Ursula had to drink. Small amounts of food from the zoo and the paltry scraps thrown by tourists were all she had to eat. It was nowhere near enough to nourish her.

Seeing Ursula in these appalling conditions was heartbreaking. Even worse was knowing that she is just one of many bears suffering in barren zoos throughout Romania without proper food, shelter or veterinary care. Others are imprisoned illegally in tiny cages on the roadside, behind restaurants or at ski resorts, on display as tourist attractions.

With your help we can rescue bears like Ursula from a life of misery in these terrible captive conditions.

Rescued from her cruel imprisonment, Ursula is now enjoying a new life of peace and freedom in the Romanian bear sanctuary, built over the past few years thanks to the generosity of WSPA supporters, and in partnership with our Romanian member society 'Millions of Friends'.

But there are many bears still living in appalling conditions like those endured by Ursula at the zoo. They are also in desperate need of help. With your support we can rescue and provide vital care for bears arriving at the sanctuary. These bears are in poor health, needing veterinary care and plenty of nutritious food to help them recover from years of neglect.

With your continued support WSPA can help these bears by:

Working with local authorities to ensure laws are enforced and captive bears confiscated from illegal private collections or rescued from squalid zoos facing closure. Their cruel imprisonment in such appalling conditions must end.
Providing the essential care and veterinary treatment that new bears arriving at the sanctuary desperately need. Ailments such as Ursula's eye infection can then receive the specialist attention required to end bears' torment.
Establishing Romania's first Wildlife Education Centre at the sanctuary. This will lead to fewer bears being taken from the wild and a general public who do not support the cruel confinement or exploitation of bears as tourist attractions.
Please make a donation today to help us give these bears the chance to express natural behaviour in a safe environment, free from cruel exploitation.

$30 could pay for important vaccinations for a bear arriving at the sanctuary
$125 could buy supplementary food and vitamins for one rescued bear in the sanctuary
$250 could help provide urgent vet care to a newly rescued bear arriving at the sanctuary
$1,300 could help maintain pools and dens for rescued bears to swim and express natural behaviour
$5,000 could help pay for the rescue and transport of ten vulnerable captive bears
Seeing Ursula take her first tentative steps of freedom at the sanctuary makes me even more determined to get the last captive Romanian bears out of cruel confinement, pain and distress and into safety. As I saw for myself, each day in captivity is utter torture for these beautiful bears. Please join WSPA Animal Rescue for $30 a month or make an urgent donation to WSPA today.

There are a number of other ways you can make a donation and help animals around the world.

Some people should be shot!

You have seen piccies of Demi: as a pup still smaller yet mistreated, perhaps physically abused, a tiny, defenceless dog for christ's sake!

I've given to wspa from time to time - the stories and photos are unbearable. The cruelty in this world is unfathomable at times, but we can look at the bears in Romania - then head to their orphanages and see exactly the same conditions applied to their deserted children of which there are thousands.

In developing or third world countries - destitute humans are worthless - so why would they place any value on animals, apart from their use as food.

Wealthy western countries exercise cruelty to animals as well and they don't have any excuse.

That's true Hebe. Why do the Courts fall for it? If a person is capable of being cruel to animal - they're also capable of violations to humans, which has been proven over and over again. Psychos who rape, torture and murder often have a history of cruelty to animals. They have to hurt something weaker than themselves.

It seems to be the accepted defence these days - who didn't have an unhappy childhood? Do we all go around hurting other people and animals?

The bears in Thailand who are milked for their bile are a disgrace too. What is it about bears?

So-called Chinese medicine!

They take rhinocerous horn to lower a fever. Whole fucking 1 ton animal slaughtered. An aspirin works MUCH better! Quacks! Frauds!
