What are you reading?
I've nearly finished Last Exit to Brooklyn. I came across a reference to its being banned in the UK and I remember the Gene Pitney song.
Fairly tame stuff by today's standards, but God it's bleak! Has anyone read it?

The better I get to know people, the more I find myself loving dogs.

Reading Paul Krugman's "Conscience of a liberal" (Liberal actually spelled with a capital L) and Neal Stephenson's "Snow Crash."
If you like SciFi grab one of Neal's books!

I loathe sci-fi. I can't even read Discworld.

Re: What are you reading?
bwahahaha Good old Terry Pratchett. He writes some amusing books but whether I would call them science fiction is another thing.
Re: What are you reading?
I can't stand science fiction either. I've just finished The Moonlit Cage - Linda Holeman, about a young Afghan girl, repelled by her village, then sold onto a nomadic tribe. Intoxicating reading. I love all those sagas, encompassing mystery, history, adventure, murder and drama.Hebe wrote:I loathe sci-fi. I can't even read Discworld.
Who's the author of Last Exit to Brooklyn Hebe?

Some guy called Hubert Selby

I'd never heard of him. It isn't really that good - it's more shock value, and I suppose in the early '60s it had plenty of that. There seems to be an abundance of transvestites, which I suppose was pretty racy stuff then.
There's an intro by Anthony Burgess discussing the meaning of obscenity and a history of the trial to ban it. Interesting stuff.

I saw the movie, but it was long ago and I was drunk. I remember the gang bang scene however.Hebe wrote:I've nearly finished Last Exit to Brooklyn. I came across a reference to its being banned in the UK and I remember the Gene Pitney song.

Re: What are you reading?
I am currently reading the short stories of Hemmingway.
There is a much mention of cofee with a hint of shaking hands, one can tell he was often trying to ride that dry wagon.

I wonder if he had the shakes as he placed the barrel of the shotgun in his mouth.JW Frogen wrote:I am currently reading the short stories of Hemmingway.
