A bit wet

Post by Outlaw Yogi » Sat Dec 25, 2010 4:19 pm

This creek never runs, that is its usually dry sand, although it does flash flood higher occasionally it only lasts a couple of hours then its gone. This is the 1st time in 18 years I've seen the creek run like a creek. Looks knee deep but is really waist deep.

Everywhere I've gone during breaks in the rain there's massive amounts of running water.

At the moment the cricket fields at Kendal's Flat in Bundaberg looks like ..

Took photo of kids with a tinny towing a boogey board around the cricket fields this morning but my el-cheapo digital camera got wet and phuked up [shoulda stayed with the 35mm amphibious]. So I swiped these from a accomplice's phone.
A bunch of kids at the skate bowl are getting around on surfboards.

Wow, that's my Home Town copping a flogging. As a kid, played Junior Cricket at Kendalls Flats. It seems there is more coming too, Hoppy?

Here is a huge Gallery of Photos. There has been much more dropped in the catchment, so this is only going to get worse.

The Cedars Crossing shots are beauties. Figured it'd go under early. Looks like I only just made it through South kolan on the way into town Xmas eve.
The water is higher since those News-Mail shots, eg the Baldwin Swamp/Lake Ellen playground swing set is 2+ft deeper in my shot than theirs, and the car in the marina carpark (pilfered phone pic) is almost completely submerged.
At that time [earlier today] the flood indicators in the marina carpark read 4.2 metres. The indicator only goes to 5 metres.

News-mail's updated gallery ..

Here's the list of roads closed 2 days ago ... the water is about a metre deeper today.

CBD roads closed by floods

http://www.news-mail.com.au/story/2010/ ... ed-floods/
HIGH tides caused chaos in Bundaberg’s street this morning, with roads in the CBD underwater, and the Burnett River reaching levels not seen since the 1970s.
Bundaberg Police, the SES and Bundaberg Regional Council have warned against playing or driving through floodwaters, as the water is tidal and may have debris or a strong current.
The following roads are now closed:

Bundaberg
- Park Street
- Walla Street (near skate bowl)
- Princess Street (near East School)
- Branyan Drive
- Under the Old Traffic Bridge
- Sussex Street

Gin Gin
- Booyal Causeway is closed (approximately 12-13 metres over) - the Goodnight Scrub area is inaccessible.
- Bungadoo Road, Bullyard - closed culvert washed out
- Diamond Hill Road, Monduran has side track in place
- Duckpond Road
- Marshall Avenue - closed - section of road washed away
- Monduran Side Track
- Moolboolaman Road- Closed at Floodways
- Nearum Road - Closed at Floodways
- Walla Road at Perry River Bridge (approximately 5-6 metres over)
Wallaville - Goondoon Road is closed in three places:
- Sheepstation Creek - culvert washed out between Drinan Road and Berrembea Road
- A section of road washed away between Geramanbulyan Creek and Klingstroms Road
- Currajong Creek (800mm over)
Zillmann Road, Wallaville at Old Wallaville Bridge

Childers
- Farnsfield Road at Logging Creek
- McKeys Road, Apple Tree Creek
- Rainbows Road, Childers
- Webbs Road, Redridge
- Woppis Road, Woodgate

Burnett North
- Bucca Crossing at Kolan River
- Cedars Road at Burnett River

My cheap @)$# digital camera is now RS. These shots were taken with my T100 phone - what a muck around.

The rain keeps coming and the water keeps rising. Rose aprox 6 inches from boxing day to yesterday, and another 12+ inches from last night to today.
Kennedy Creek is now overflowing the dyke in 2 places and pouring straight onto Kendall's Flat cricket fields.

This shot is from Bourbong St east looking into the cricket fields yesterday.

This shot is from almost the same position today.

This is the playground at Baldwin swamp/Lake Ellen today.

Yeah!. It is not for the first time either Hoppy. Pretty sure it was about the same in the early 1970's. Targo Street will be gone, and that Pub........phuck.....forget it's name.............used to be run by the Ing Family............will now have very close water front views.

Apparently the water level is the highest since the 1971 flood [1974 was worse elsewhere].
Parts of Targo St have been under for almost a week now, and the Melbourne hotel has been a waterfront property for 3 or 4 days now.

Yeah, that's the one......The Melbourne Hotel. Was my regular watering hole every Wednesday after work. Ma Ing and her two sons, Les and Alan. Alan may still be around. Former SAS and then of local sky-diving fame.

Man this is getting rather serious. Evacuations have begun (along Quay st east and Bourbong st east) and I'm now on an island called East Bundaberg.
The flood depth guage at the marina when the submerged car shot was taken on boxing day read 4.2 metres.
Rumour has it the river will peak at 9 metres in 2 more days.
Today the water rose 3 to 4 feet in 3 hours, then another 6 inches in the following 2 hours.
The water is creeping up the street where I'm staying [near old saw mill].
We're preparing for evacuation sometime between tonight and day after tomorrow.
Water level on Targo st is lapping at Woondooma St out front of Queenslander hotel.
River side caravan park over north has been moved onto Perry St - some lost everything - saw a young Murri lad come out of the water with his didge and walk off into town.
Lions park has a raging torrent through it, with yatchs smashed half way up trees, the toilet block is not visible.
A huge lake now extends from Quay St east, over the netball courts [hoops just showing] across Bourbong St east, over Kendal's Flat, and Kenedy Creek is probably lapping at the Tatts hotel.
Kenedy creek is lapping at the roadway on Kenedy bridge.

EDIT ADDITION - Water level up river at Paradise Dam is 70 metres plus [yes seven zero metres], the dam wall has a huge crack in it, and if it breaks will send an equivalent of Sydney harbour volume tsunami our way.

Having probs getting photos out of phone and onto USB stick.
Will try again later if possible.
