Deadwood

Post by boxy » Thu Nov 25, 2010 8:37 pm

Just a thread for all things Deadwood related. Firstly, I'd just like to thank Frogen for recomending the series to me here, ages ago. Thanks, mate... without your vouching, I would have missed, probably the best thing on the tube in years 8-)

I just bought the 2nd and 3rd season (had the original for a while now). Got a bit political towards the end, with the Pinks entering the picture, taking out union organisers. I've always thought that small business has more in common with workers, than with corporate capitalism.

One of my all time favorite shows. Glad you like it Boxy.

It has everything, profanity, sex, pathos, comedy, wit, violence, love.

I imagine this is the sort of stuff Shakespeare would be writing today.

I love the scenes with Swearagen and Wu.

There was supposed to be a fourth and final season but the Network axed it. The writer, David Milch still floats the idea there can be a movie.

David Milch, is doing a new series about horse racing called Luck; Dustin Hoffman begged for and got a recurring role in it.

I loved the first season one, where the dope fiends stole his heroin... who? wu? who you stupid chink :D

Wu's on first ;)

Mr. Wu: Bak Wai Lo Me... Cocksucka.
Al Swearengen: Yeah, glad I taught you that fuckin' word. These are whites, huh?
[Swearengen gestures back and forth to Wu's drawing]
Mr. Wu: HO! White COCKSUCKA!
[Wu produces a bag]
Al Swearengen: [Swearengen again motions back and forth to Wu and Wu's drawing] Two white cocksuckers killed him... and stole the dope he was bringin' to you!
Mr. Wu: White Cocksucka... YOU! SWIDGEN!
Al Swearengen: The dope you were gonna fuckin' sell to me?
Mr. Wu: White Cocksucka...
Al Swearengen: These two white cocksuckers? Who the fuck did it?
Mr. Wu: Wu...
Al Swearengen: [Swearengen is completely exasperated] Who, you ignorant fuckin' chink?
Mr. Wu: WU?
Al Swearengen: WHO? WHO? Who stole the fuckin' dope?
Mr. Wu: COCKSUCKA!

LOL boxy.

At work when ever there is an absurd situation I always say "fucking Wu".

No one knows what I am on about.

There is a another good show called Sons of Anarchy about a bikie gang, I have the first season but can't find two or three.

There is a scene where they are trying to break into a tow yard with guard dogs, one of the bikies was told to drug the dogs, he does and when they break in the dogs go bezerk and almost kill them.

When asked what he drugged them with he said Meth.

Bloody meth-heads. Far to inflated estimates of their own intelligence :D

"I see as much misery outta them movin' to justify theirselves as them that set out to do harm."

Seems to be a recurring theme throughout the series. So many well meaning action's leading to tragedy. And in the end, bastardry winning out.

To be honest, I was left wanting a 4th series... but to be honest to the theme, perhaps it should be left unfinished. Life goes on, much as it has before... always has, always will (with luck).

Yes, there was supposed to be another year but HBO cut it off.

The writer has floated the idea of finishing it in a movie.

The series is based on real characters, fictionalized. The real Al Swearagen was making the equivalent of 100,000 a month at one time and died penniless.

Seth Bullock barricaded himself in his office and refused to leave when he lost the election, he latter became of close friend of Teddy Roosevelt.

I am glad that this was a serialised production. This just wouldn't have worked as a movie. It is all about the characters, and the series gave time to develop them. I think that Lord of the Rings (a great work, brought down to mediocre level by having to conform to the human, 3hr max., attention span) would have benefited from serialisation.

And I think they protrayed some of the famous, R/L characters quite well... much more realistic than the disney versions. Jane is one of my favourite characters, and I'm glad she got more of a showing in the final series. They made inspirational characters who shone, not because of grand actions, but because of their beautiful flaws

It would have been interesting to see what happened to Cye Tolliver in a final series though. He was the one character that had absolutely no redeaming qualities... the devil? And yet, in such a lawless environment, his influence was minor.

I have to say Boxy, this is the first time I have agreed with every letter you have wrote.

That is the way I see the series too.

Now let us never speak of this again.
