Let us write proper English, even on the fucking web!

Post by Jovial Monk » Thu Jan 08, 2009 8:40 am

Getting sick of stupid usages I see every fukking day!

*** There, their, they're used interchangably!
THERE==not here
THEIR==something belonging to a group
THEY'RE==that group is doing something, i.e is a contraction of THEY ARE
THERE'S==there is. apostrophy denoting a missing letter, not ownership
"theirs no global warming"="There is no GW" (found on PB) (Poster as thick as his sloppy grammar indicates)

*** Two, to, too
TWO==1+1
TO==adverbial preposition "He was told frequently to go to the devil"
TOO==Agreement as in "I hope you hate sloppy grammar TOO"
TOO==indicating an extreme "too sloppy"

*** Lose, Loose
I remember being told about this in fukking primary school!
Lose==you had something but don't anymore
Loose==the opposite to tight. You cannot 'loose your money' etc

*** Right, write, rite, wright
Right==opposite of wrong also opposite of left
Write==what you do with pen, paper & ink
Rite==ritual or ceremony
Wright==master craftsman, now obsolescent, but used still e.g. in playwright, cartwright, wheelwright

*** hear, here
Hear==what you do with your ears
Here==not there
To applaud someone we can shout "hear hear" as if to say "listen to this" or "well worth listening to"

Commas, if unsure you have a comma in the right place, and it still makes sense without the comma, leave the comma out. If really can't tell whether the comma is needed, break the longer sentence into two shorter ones. Generally, use less not more commas. Do not use commas where you use the conjunctions AND or BUT.

Use of apostrophes
1. to stand in for a missing letter: we're = we are
2. to indicate ownership "Howard's complete dickheadedness."
Important caveat re 2. Only living things can OWN something
So "Joe's butcher shop" but "This years looming depression"

The above are the most common, anyone see any other fairly frequent misuse/abuse of grammar on the web?

Personally I would rather see incorrect grammar and punctuation than consistent swearing. It might seem OK to those who like to use F......g as their main adjective - but there are other substitutes that are more aesthetically pleasing. :geek:

Swearing has its place, but like with LOW_IQ quickly becomes monotonous.

Ans i suppose swearing to offend people is less offensive then misusing a word out of ignorance?

Swearing to offend is only one function of swearing. Could be to relieve feeling "Ah fuck!" When you drop something heavy on your foot, etc.

Gramatically incorrect Monk..sorry I couldn't resist. :)

The" loose" used in palce of" lose" is annoyiong ..but hey we all make mistakes on the net and I think the its a bit nitpicky to worry about every single one..

I excelled at spelling and punctuation at school..but not so now.

RELAX!!!
