Criminal Mostafa Baluch Disappears in Bail Breach

A massive police manhunt is underway after a Sydney restaurateur accused of involvement in a drug smuggling plot allegedly breached bail and fled his home in Sydney’s northern beaches on Monday night.

Mostafa Baluch is accused of being involved in a $270 million shipment of cocaine from Ecuador, but has now disappeared just a few days after he was granted bail.

The 33-year-old was last seen at his Bayview home on Pittwater Road at about 10.40pm on Monday night.

It’s understood police raced to the home shortly after they were notified the man had allegedly cut through his GPS tracking device. Officers searched the home but could not locate him.

Baluch was arrested in June over his alleged involvement in the importation of a 900kg shipment of cocaine that was intercepted by police, and granted bail last Thursday.

“It’s certainly not a failing by the police, the guy has (allegedly) broken the law by, from what I understand, removing his GPS tracker,” Police Minister David Elliott told the media.

“Now that says to me that he doesn’t deserve the confidence the court has afforded him.”

Detective Superintendent Rob Critchlow told reporters proceedings were underway to seize some of Baluch’s assets following his failure to make a scheduled court appearance on Tuesday.

“I understand as part of a surety for this fellow, he lodged a property I believe worth to be $4 million,” Critchlow said.

“Our investigations indicate he has even more resources than that.

“I understand that proceedings have been launched already to seize that home and that house will then become part of state resources,” he said.

Baluch is described as being of Mediterranean/Middle Eastern appearance, about 180cm tall, of a muscular build, with black hair, brown eyes and unshaven. It’s believed he may be travelling in a dark grey Mercedes SUV.

Anyone who sights Baluch, or who has information about his whereabouts, is urged not to approach him, and to call triple-0 immediately.

NSW Police fear Mr Baluch may have left NSW and could be attempting to flee overseas, and have engaged interstate law enforcement to help in the search.

Victoria Police, Queensland Police Service and the Western Australia Police Force have all shared his image on social media.
