Aboriginal body cops bias claim

A FORMER senior executive at a state peak Aboriginal health body is accusing her one-time employer of discrimination because she is Christian and non-Indigenous.

Angela Jane Brougham served as strategic business executive of the Aboriginal Health Council of South Australia from November 12, 2018, to June 30, 2020.

In documents filed with the Federal Circuit Court, Ms Brougham claims her contract, which included a six-figure salary, was not extended because she had made complaints about ongoing harassment, bullying and false complaints against her.

However, the council contends in its defence that Ms Brougham was among four employees who did not get their contracts renewed because of financial issues.

In a claim for breach of the Fair Work Act, Ms Brougham’s lawyers say she is a “practising Christian but at no time has she allowed her beliefs to interfere with her performance” and that “although (Ms Brougham) is not of Indigenous heritage, she is not racist”.

A three-day hearing on the dispute is set for next March.
