LOGAN terror accused Agim Kruezi pleads guilty

Post by sprintcyclist » Sat Jun 16, 2018 12:07 pm

LOGAN terror accused Agim Kruezi was within days of launching a terror attack on Australian soil, allegedly embarking on a frenzied, deadly shopping spree to load up on weapons, police allege.

Further details about Kruezi’s alleged preparations were heard in the Brisbane Magistrates Court yesterday when eight more charges were laid against the 23-year-old, taking the total number to 15.

Despite the allegations, Kruezi’s father Milazim last night said the delays in his son’s case had been “frustrating” and that he was “proud” of him.

“They keep trying very hard to bring new information, new witnesses. They keep asking all sorts of people who know us and people who don’t know us,” he told The Courier-Mail.

“Thank God my son’s a very patient man … I’m very impressed with his patience. Very proud of him.

“(He’s doing) better than I ever imagined because he knows he’s an innocent man. He’s got a clear conscience. Nothing to worry about.

“We will deal with it and we will find a way out. But (at the moment) we can do nothing.”

It is understood the target of the alleged terror attack had not been chosen.

The further charges were added to the former bookshop employee’s tally during a mention in the Brisbane Magistrates Court.

He had already been charged with seven offences, including recruiting another person to become a member of ISIS, unlawfully possessing a shortened .22 calibre semi-automatic Sterling long-arm rifle, and transporting a firearm between Sydney and Logan in preparation for a terrorist act.

The extra charges include three counts of preparing for incursions into foreign states to engage in hostile activities, and five counts relating to preparation for or planning a terrorist act.

It is alleged Kruezi – an Australian-born man of Albanian descent – had applied for an Australian passport on November 28, 2013, and then bought a plane ticket from Australia to Kosovo in March the following year.

He also allegedly went to Brisbane International Airport on March 9, 2014, where he was stopped by Customs officers as he tried to board a flight and his belongings were searched.

Magistrate Bronwyn Springer told Kruezi that he was also being charged with preparing for or planning a terrorist act by obtaining a compound bow and arrows at Logan on May 17, 2014.

He also allegedly acquired a black-handled Gurkha Kukri machete, a 10-litre plastic jerry can, containing petrol, and corks. He also allegedly tried to obtain glass bottles between May and September 2014.

On September 10, 2014, Kruezi was taken into custody, along with co-accused Omar Succarieh, in counter-terrorism raids across Brisbane and Logan.

The Courier-Mail has previously reported that Kruezi was also allegedly linked to the associates of Sydney man Omarjan Azari, who is charged with conspiring to plan or prepare a terrorist act.

Lawyers for Kruezi yesterday asked for a four-week adjournment and declined to make an application for bail on his behalf.

“We had made a request from the Commonwealth seeking some clarification about some matters contained in the brief of evidence,” his Legal Aid lawyer said. “We received that clarification yesterday.”

Ms Springer told Kruezi his case was being adjourned to committal call-over on May 3. “You will not be produced on that date and no doubt your lawyers will be in touch with you,” she said.

Kruezi replied: “OK, I understand all that.”

Kruezi’s father told The Courier-Mail yesterday that his son spent his time in prison reading, exercising and watching a “bit” of TV. “He’s a well-behaved young man.”
