A 12-year-old female kangaroo at Fuzhou Zoo in Fujian province died after she was struck with a stone that caused "massive bleeding" from one foot on April 4, China Daily reports.
Just days later a five-year-old male kangaroo was left injured after part of a brick was flung into his enclosure.
The animal's breeder, identified only as Zhang, said visitors often resort to the cruel tactic in a bid to make the animals "jump around" or to wake them up.
The zoo is equipped with signage warning visitors not to throw objects, and also with CCTV.
The cameras however are pointed at the enclosures rather than at the viewing areas, meaning offenders are able to pass unidentified.
The zoo is currently seeking additional funding from the provincial government so it can install additional cameras.
It has meanwhile reduced the amount of kangaroos visible in the enclosure to three.
There are plans to preserve the dead female kangaroo and place her on display.
