I got a mortgage in 1983 .... I had it paid off by 1996, thanks to a couple of "windfalls". It wasn't easy but just as well as in my retirement I am "rent free", otherwise I wonder how I would cope.

you can't live in any of the major cities and rent your own house if you are on a pension ... at best you may be able to share.

ohh, and the article isn't being honest ... In my experiece, people aren't on long term leases because in more cases than not, they don't want to commit to it. About half my tenants refuse to sign up for even 12 months, let alone longer. I guess that's what happens when full time jobs are falling to the wayside.

Well, I don't have any rental properties but I have relatives in Melbourne who are in Real Estate. I don't know anybody who is renting .... everybody I know either has a Mortgage or has paid it off.

I do know of several people who have 4-6 "rental" properties. I haven't asked what they do with them. Try Hards I expect .... how they got a Bank to go along with it who knows? Definitely not something I would do.

I'd recommend it just because an owner would have to deal with fuckwits like you.

I owe another USD 100,000 on my place. It is in an area outside of Atlanta that hasn't quite taken off but will in the future because Atlanta, like most thriving American cities, is becoming too expensive, while my area is still affordable. My area also has excellent schools, some of the best in the state, and it is safe, meaning no blacks. Lots of rednecks with guns however.
