Just this week I spent a few days in a charming English colonial town on the Atlantic coast of Georgia known as Savannah.

The place oozes with charm

I got my lodgings through airbnb.com and stayed in a 4-story 1905 mansion that also oozes with charm. My hosts were an elderly homosexual couple (getting married next week they said) who were also pretty charming. Thing is, they kept talking about their dead mothers, showing me plates and cups and furniture and paintings and knick-knacks their mothers had owned. My mother is alive but if she weren't I can't imagine I would do the same much less haul her possessions around the country from house to house and bore every stranger and friend with stories ... could it be true that mothers somehow contribute to their sons' gayness?

Perhaps this is what Monk has planned for his B and B in Tassie? Lots of old plates, cups, pepper and salt shakers on the brekky table?

I presume that he realises that B &B doesn't mean pigs head stew or heart attack pizza in the evening. It's bacon and eggs for BREAKFAST.

Monk's "treasures" aren't even his Mother's it is stuff he finds at Op Shops that other people throw out. Mind you, I do know some people who have actually picked up some worthwhile "treasures" at Vinnies. Who could be bothered though?

I bought an old Hawaiian shirt for a fancy dress party at vinnies once. I found a fifty dollar note in the top pocket when I got home.
I am a minimalist and doubt I will keep too much " junk" that my mum leaves me when she dies but I do have a special tea pot with milk jug and sugar pot that was my grandmothers. It is from the nineteen fifties made in Engalnd and never been used. I often wonder should I just make up a brew in it what's the point of just looking at it? I've got it in the wife's display cabinet with all of her families " junk" and it's the only thing people ever comment about when they see the cabinet. It is unusual it's light blue with gold design on it, I must admit it's the only " junk" I've ever bothered to keep. Oh I've also got a toy cast iron jag and a toy cast iron motor bike in pristine condition from the early sixties,again made in England. I still remember the day my old man brought them home for me.
Other than that I try to only keep what I use, I hate clutter.

agreed Skip. What a burden that must be to have possessions that one feels forced to hang on to because they belonged to *Mother* ... I am planning to sell my house in the Spring and while I don't have a lot (learned my lesson when moving from Japan) I have more than I want. Optimally I would only like to own what I can put in a small suitcase ... but that is hard when you are married.

It's probably more a female thing to collect pretty things. I've got a few pieces of delicate furniture passed from my great grandparents to my grandparents - then to my parents. I can't part with them, but I know if I passed on - if my son had his way he would throw everything out. However my daughter loves these things too - so who knows how long they will last in the family.

Skippy - your son might get married one day and he could want that little tea set as a keepsake. If you like it - keep it safe.
