This is just ridiculous. What sort of father would make this choice. I see some very danger attitudes towards women here. This was an Asian expat so not an Arab.

Father arrested after letting daughter drown

A father has been arrested in Dubai after allowing his daughter to drown on a public beach rather than be rescued by lifeguards, claiming she would have been dishonoured if touched by strange men.

The Asian expatriate, who has not been named, wrestled with lifeguards to stop them entering the water to save his 20-year-old daughter, who had got into difficulty in the sea in the Gulf state. The young woman drowned before she could be rescued.

“Two rescue men were at the beach and they rushed to help the girl,” Lieutenant Colonel Ahmed Burqibah, the deputy director of Dubai Police’s search and rescue department, told the local Emirates 24/7 news website.

“The father was a tall and strong man. He started pulling and preventing the rescue men and got violent with them. He told them that he prefers his daughter being dead than being touched by a strange man.”

The incident has caused widespread anger and dismay in Dubai. The father has now been prosecuted for culpability in his daughter’s death.

“This is one of the incidents which I cannot forget. It shocked me and many others who were involved in the case,” Mr Burqibah said.

Yea, I read that in our press yesterday too.
As a father myself I find it hard to comprehend a persons hatred or stupid belief in fairies in the sky could outweigh that of their own child's life.
He really needs a good punch in the head.

What surprises me is that there are public beaches ... and swimming. That means there must be swimsuits as well ...

I was thinking along the same lines. Do the women have to cover up?

No sky fairies involved, just the words and teachings of Mohammed... as interpreted by some Muslims.

I cannot recall when but several years ago there was something in the Newspaper about closing a swimming pool to the Public so that Muslim women could go swimming, provided they wear one of these.

Westerner wear swim suits and bikinis.
The deprived Arab men come to perv. I have seen the women in full cover-up point at the western immoral sluts.
Saudi men flock to perv..... they cruse very slowly and fill up the foreshore at peak season. I can understand this... that's what I did the first time I went to Bondi Beach.
have seen locals swim in full battle armour.....

If the area is an open beach.... provided you are wearing the minimum and are not having sex on the beach all is cool.

I would never trust it to be "cool" and would steer well clear of any beach in the arab world. I honestly think you would have to be an idiot to wear a bikini there.

It is OK here in Dubai. They are tolerant. They have to be they have run out of oil and need to build an economy based on other things. Tourism is a big one. You need to cover up if you leave the beaches though.

I have to say the leadership here are very visionary and have done a great job over the last 50 years. They are envied by the Arab world and they are starting to try to emulate it.

As they say; better a good king than a bad democracy. In the UAE they have good leadership....... and I actually mean this. They have and are doing a very good job.
