Friendly harassment

Post by mantra » Thu Oct 30, 2014 7:32 am

I can't see what the problem is. Yes the greetings would eventually become boring, but surely trying to outlaw people from saying hello to someone walking down the street is a bit over the top.

Since time begun attractive young women have always had comments from males and if anything they should be flattered rather than repulsed. When they stop - then they'll have something to get upset about.

An online video of a young woman being harassed by men while walking around Manhattan has been described as "shocking".

A women's rights group in the United States is using the video, which racked up more than 1.1 million views in one day, to highlight the sort of harassment women experience every day.

The issue has hit a nerve, with the group receiving harassing phone calls from those who think the behaviour is acceptable.

The video follows actor Shoshana Roberts, who is clad in black jeans and a crewneck T-shirt, for 10 hours.

She received more than 100 comments and even more whistles and winks.

Roberts, who remains silent throughout the clip, decided to make the video with her filmmaker boyfriend, Rob Bliss, after becoming tried of being shouted at and approached by men on the streets.

Men yell out, "Hey, baby," "Hey, beautiful," "How are you this morning?" and "Have a nice evening" to try and engage her.

One man walked beside her for several minutes after making a comment.

Founder of women's rights group Hollaback, Emily May, said street harassment is a serious issue.

"I have to say I live and breathe this every day and yet still for me, it's shocking to see that number," Ms May said.

"Because you start to do the math and you're like, 108 times in 10 hours – that's like once every five minutes, and I mean, that's insane.

"That's more than a quality of life issue. I mean that's a really serious issue and it's a form of sexual violence."

I note that the vast majority of "harassment" was from "Black" American males or "hispanics". I'm guessing this is a cultural thing.
I thought she was pretty rude to some of them though. Not even a smile in acknowledgement. Maybe in America that's considered a "come on".

Yea I read this yesterday and was a bit surprised at the comments she received. I wonder if this sort of thing happens in OZ? I check out a female as much as the next bloke if I'm walking down the road or in a shopping mall but I would never harass her or follow her or probably even speak to them. Maybe on a Friday or Saturday night when you've had a few to drink you might be a bit more chatty but in day light without any intoxication I'm a bit surprised at her reactions.

Only one bloke followed her for a few minutes - the rest were just greetings and winks etc. They sped the film up, but it worked out to a comment every 5 minutes.

Manhattan appears to have more outgoing males than Sydney or similar where it's more common to just stare or whistle. Nothing has changed though. Men still like looking at attractive young females and if they've got the confidence then they still wink, whistle and smile at their targets.

Targets?
Really? Targets?
Yes, it is true that men like women and some they even find attractive... that's how the sex thing and continuation of the species works at a natural level.

I note these days women are not pretending as much as they used to that they too find men attractive.

What's so horrible about this?

I STILL get whistled at.

Be grateful. Those guys don't whistle and "harass" fat, ugly broads.

The best thing to do is give them a bit of a "wave" and a "smile" and MAKE THEIR DAY ... they are harmless (in daylight hours).

I agree, although it's been a long time since a male whistled at me. I usually smiled or waved too - unless the bloke was ugly. Now I'm lucky if I get the occasional older man eyeing me off or smiling at me in the supermarket, but I'm happy with that.

Target was the only word I could think of at the time.

Maybe they don't. Perhaps you're looking at the wrong demographic?

Hmmm...
Target was the only word I could think of at the time.
How about...
Men still like looking at attractive young females and if they've got the confidence then they still wink, whistle and smile at them or attractive women or beauty.
I note these days women are not pretending as much as they used to that they too find men attractive.

Perhaps I wasn't clear...
I note these days women are not pretending as much as they used to... and that they too find men attractive. Does that make more sense? I was after all talking about the natural attraction between the sexes.
As for looking... I'm not... not for an individual nor a demographic.

And so they should. A woman who is also confident won't take offence.

Yes that makes more sense. It depends on the female I suppose and whether she is prepared to make the first move.

My misunderstanding. Some people as they get older still see themselves as attractive as they were a couple of decades ago and won't face the reality that they're no longer a spring chicken.
