Check this out. This takes guts.

The veteran surfer Garrett McNamara looks likely to have broken the world record for the highest wave ever ridden. He caught the wave off the coast of Nazaré in Portugal on Monday (January 28). It was reportedly 100ft high (30.48m), although that is subject to verification.

He's 45, so I don't think you can put it down to "young and foolish"... more likey because it's brought to you by wavejet, surge body glove, red nose, maui jim, donjoy, raw elements, kona red, futurefins.com and nell surfboards.
