"Schoolies"

Post by Aussie » Fri Nov 23, 2012 5:46 pm

Was never an event in my day. My eldest Grand-Daughter does Year 12 next year, and I am dreading the moment she expresses a wish to attend. I will be very worried if I cannot somehow dissuade her, even if I have to go to extreme limits of bribery to make sure she is not in the environment where her life might end like this.

I can think of no 'positive' which outweighs this 'negative.'

I'd gather she will be like 99.9999% of leavers and not die a stupid death.

At worst, she'll probably end up the town bike for all the teenage boys in her class

What a load of bullshit.
Schoolies that is.
When did it start?
Where did it start?
Never was around in my day.
Only rich kids from private schools ever went anywhere on mass... interstate or overseas... hell even locally.

My son went two years in a row. It was a big worry. Fortunately my daughter backed out at the last minute. A few years on and the kids seem more reckless than ever.

Aussie - you can't make a 17 year old girl (or a boy) do what you want as much as it is in their best interest. Parents have usually given up and they're the only ones with the power to stop them.

Bribery could work.

Maybe Aussie could promise not to pay late night visits to her bedroom?

She will want to go to Schoolies. It might cost me, and I will pay up. Anything to keep her away from a useless week of bitter/sweet nothings where they achieve exactly what?

I would be worried too Aussie.

Things have changed. The kids seem to have transformed muck-up day to a full blown event with heaps of piss, sex and drugs including stupid high risk taking.

It appears to be the new right of passage. Hell if they had this in my day.... we would have just about killed ourselves... we nearly did that without this sort of thing in place.

All you can do is provide advice and guidence and maybe a tight lease. Once this part of over, they are young adults so there is little that can be done.

Restricting money is one option.

That won't work because most kids have their own money. Aussie will probably have to give her something substantial that she really wants and that will be a cost.

Still if her mind is made up - she might come back the worse for wear. From memory I scared my daughter out of it. The same tactic had the opposite effect on my son.

Since when are children adults since when can they just do whatever they want.
Have you parents eschewed all responsibility for your children?
All control?
Don't your children respect you and your wishes?
