Pakistani sheep cull 'extremely distressing', says National Farmers Federation

FARMERS have branded a mass cull of sheep of 21,000 Australian sheep by Pakistani authorities "extremely distressing", but say banning the live export trade would erode animal welfare standards worldwide.

A report by the ABC's Four Corners on Monday, probed the circumstances surrounding the inhumane culls in September and October.

Officials from the Sindh provincial government claimed the slaughter - which saw some sheep buried alive - was necessary due to health concerns, but these claims were vehemently rejected by Australia's live export industry and the Department of Agriculture, Fisheries and Forestry (DAFF).

The National Farmers Federation (NFF) labelled the cull of healthy sheep unprecedented, appalling and unnecessary.

The live export industry had taken "decisive action" and voluntarily suspended exports of sheep to Pakistan and Bahrain as DAFF investigates the circumstances, the NFF said in a statement.

Exporter Elders is now preparing to send a shipment of nearly 3000 breeder cows, 2000 of which were destined for Pakistan, where they would be under the supervision of the same government department that carried out the cull.

Senator Ludwig says he is satisfied that the department has done all of the due diligence for the export of the cows.

"Breeder cattle are are quite expensive animals to begin with," he told ABC Television.

"They are also likely to end up within local herds and well looked after - they have a long productive life."

"The High Commissioner in Pakistan, myself, the department, everyone including the exporter and the importer did everything they could to ensure the animal welfare of those sheep," Senator Ludwig said.

"Ultimately, it didn't succeed (and) we had an appalling circumstance."

The department says it is investigating the case for any possible breaches of the Exporter Supply Chain Assurance System.

RSPCA Australia chief executive Heather Neil said the ABC report showed the live export trade wasn't worth the risk.

"No matter how much industry or government involvement there is, the live export of animals for slaughter presents an unacceptable level of risk for the animals and is inherently cruel," Ms Neil said.

The revelations have prompted the Australian Greens to renew calls for Australia's live export trade to be banned.

Don't certain countries demand that they get live stock? The Muslims need to actually kill an animal as part of some celebration. The Jews like to do something with their meat as well. Don't they?

Actually, I haven't had a steak or a leg of lamb for 6 months. Nor have I had full cream milk, cream, cheese or any other "dairy". Time for another Cholesterol test ... later this week. It was 6.8 last time and the GP went apopolictic.

This latest problem is not so much a food processing one where animals are mistreated during the process. This is about Pakistan claiming they were diseased then killing them all in a disorganised barbaric fashion. When we transport animals to places like this we lose control of them. There has to be better safeguards in place and organisation if this trade is to gain public support.

We could of course kill the animals here and send refrigerated carcasses etc. NZ has phased out the trade successfully.
