A man who held his sister-in-law over a railing at a high-rise Sydney car park after suspecting she was leading his wife "astray" is likely to be given a jail sentence, a court has heard.

Ismail Belghar, 37, has pleaded guilty to assaulting his wife's sister Canan Kokden and then detaining her without consent by holding her head and shoulders over the car park railing at Sydney's Broadway shopping centre in December 2009.

During his sentencing hearing at the Downing Centre District Court on Friday, Crown Prosecutor Mark Tedeschi QC said Ms Kokden "genuinely felt that she was going to be thrown over the railing ... onto the road below".

"The crown does not say that the accused had any intention to kill her. Still the victim was genuinely convinced that she was going to die," Mr Tedeschi said.

Belghar, a Moroccan immigrant, detained Ms Kokden about two months after she took his wife Hanife Kokden to a beach where they possibly wore bikinis, which he "disapproved of", the court heard.

Mr Tedeschi said Belghar was fearful that Ms Kokden was leading his wife "astray" and undermining his relationship with her.

In an effort to "control future contact between the victim and her sister", Belghar created fear "to reinforce his message".

"(Belghar) uttered: `I'm going to kill you, I'm going to kill you'," Mr Tedeschi said.

The crown submitted that Belghar had shown "no real remorse" since the offence and had shown "a remarkable lack of self awareness".

But defence barrister Stuart Bouveng said Belghar was a man of good character who had no prior or subsequent convictions.

He said Belghar's open-handed slap to Ms Kokden's face was on the lower end of the scale for an assault offence, that he detained her for less than a minute and that it was unplanned.

The court heard that Belghar was suffering from depression, anxiety, had a social phobia and had lived with the offence "hanging over his head" for nearly three years.

He submitted that a suspended sentence or a home detention would be appropriate.

But Judge Peter Zahra said it was "difficult to see how the court could impose a non-custodial sentence".

Belghar, who had been on bail, was remanded in custody for sentence on October 19.
