Our inbuilt Gaydar

Post by mantra » Fri May 18, 2012 6:17 am

This is not meant to offend gay people, but it raises the argument again - is homosexuality a condition people are born with, or is it a lifestyle choice?

A study has been done on whether people can recognise a gay person instantly and in the majority of cases they can - even when facial pictures only are turned upside down.

Perhaps genetic tests should be conducted to see whether there is an altering of chromosones that aren't apparent in a heterosexual person? In my opinion the eyes are a giveaway in males - although with females it seems harder to pick.
MOST people possess an automatic ''gaydar'' that assesses sexual orientation in less than a blink of an eye, research has shown.

In tests, scientists found that gaydar works on an unconscious level and is more accurate when directed at women.

Volunteers asked to distinguish between photos of ''straight'' and ''gay'' faces were able to do so in just 50 milliseconds - a third of the time of a blink.

Their accuracy remained greater than chance even when the photos were upside-down.

For women's faces, participants were 65 per cent accurate in guessing sexual orientation when the photos were flashed on a screen.

Differentiating between gay and straight men turned out to be harder. In this case, gaydar got the answer right only 57 per cent of the time.

The research, published in the online journal Public Library of Science ONE, involved 129 college students. They were each shown 96 photos of young men and women who identified themselves as gay or straight.

US psychologist Joshua Tabak, who led the study at the University of Washington, said: ''It may be similar to how we don't have to think about whether someone is a man or a woman or black or white.''

Only photos of people without ''give-away'' clues such as facial hair, make-up or piercings were used in the experiment.

I'd like a link to the Gaydar quiz (as I am sure others would). It might be an interesting addition to a potentially "off the cuff" comment by someone who doesn't really want comments.

Then after we find out whether we are "offended" by the pictures or the idea of homosexuality, you, Mantra, might hold a seminar to tell us WHY?

OK?

I don't know about you, Mantra, but I'm totally unimpressed with a 65% and 57% accuracy rate. Given that it's either gay or straight, you should get 50% just by blindly guessing, yeah?

That suggests to me that most people don't in fact have an effective "gaydar".

The eyeshadow is a dead giveaway in men, and the nose rings in women.

I think that's why they turned the photos upside down. Someone should introduce them to photoshop. Even MS Paint can flip the image.

The Pineal gland of a homo male is enlarged compared with one of a hetro male.

Yogic doctrines mention influences/impacts on behaviour resulting from pituitary and pineal glands. But I gotta go .. so no explanation .. do your own research ..

.. seeya'z in a coupla weeks animals.
If Donald Trump is so close to the Ruskis, why couldn't he get Vladimir Putin to put novichok in Xi Jjinping's lipstick?

I was going to say the pink nail polish on men and the distinct lisp were pretty reliable determinants.

:thumb :thumb

I have a few gay friends, and one evening (before I left Sydney) I had a large BBQ, and invited half the street, (so they wouldnt complain about noise lol) and a number of my friends.

Among my friends was a gay male who mingled with everyone, (he's really social ) and after the BBQ, I asked my neighbour (also a social bloke and who works in a similar line of work to my gay friend, hence they spent half the night chatting) if he could pick the gay one.

He had no idea, was so shocked when I told him.

I think some just cry for attention, this and want the world to know they are gay so make it obvious, be it mannerisms, or dress... but given my gay friends are comfortable in their skins, this and dont feel they have to shout their sexuality out, just don't make it bleeding obvious to the casual observer.

Mantra, I can guarantee you, you would not be able to tell any of my 3 gay friends are gay just by looking at them.

Lol, even I forget sometimes.

This said, I did nurse with a few others, and one I worked with was extremely camp and flamboyant, would prance around the ward annoying the shit out of everyone.
But he was quite young, and probably still trying to get his head around his sexuality.

Is it a lifestyle choice?

Well, I'm not sure, so will remain on the fence with this one.... it could be a brain/chemical thingy.
