Do the police have helicopters? As understaffed as the Dallas Police Department is, they would be on home invasions and car jackings like a duck on a June bug. The chase would be live on the local news.

I hope they don't have helicopters. Having a helicopter breathing down a violent criminal's neck means only one thing - the criminal will feel pushed to the wall, seriously threatened, and will do extremely dangerous things he might never do otherwise.

Usually this is the aftermath:

Praising something that kills innocent civilians - is a highly ungodly thing.

In some Australian states, Police are not permitted to "chase" for fear of causing vehicular accidents, and the resulting legal
actions against Police....
Im not sure if a disclaimer applies in all states, but Qld Police have to sign a disclaimer before they graduate, which absolves the
Government from all responsibility if something goes wrong...in other words, the Police Unions in an attempt to protect their members from law suits, push to enact "no chase" rules....
A bit strange, considering the Police officers and the Government are in a master/servant relationship, and the Officers
are simply doing their duty....the disclaimer apparently overrules everything...if the graduating officer refuses to sign, he doesnt
graduate....just another way the government avoids massive law suits....putting the responsibility back on the officer...

The helicopter is above directing the chase. The pursuit is what the criminals are fleeing. Are you suggesting they let them go? That doesn't seem like a very smart thing. The police helicopter can arrange intercepts and road blocks more easily and is not doing the actual chasing.

It's okay if they don't see it or hear it and it's on a distance. They can leave them escape and think they won - and surprise them later in their homes while they're brushing their teeth.

That seems like a limp wristed approach to stopping crime. That gives anybody in a stolen car free reign to go on rampage as long as they wait until the police aren't around when they leave the car. The government refuses to protect by letting the officers take all of the liability for their actions when they are representatives of the city.(county, state, whatever) It's your country, but I don't understand that.

And also let's not forget - limousines. Expensive limousines for diplomats - are important :thumb

It's better if it's a BMW 7, long wheelbase, turbocharged V12 :bgrin

Look at the middle one - he's happy. Proof right there - that it's fast, comfy, and reliable mashina :bgrin

That's more like what I'm talking about, but our police set up an ambush in an unpopulated area. How do you know they won't drop people off while under a bridge before they get home, or switch cars in a crowded place to be lost? They use "stop sticks". A cop waits ahead of the fleeing car and from cover, throws a spiked stick out in front of the car to blow his tires. Then it becomes a slow speed chase until they stop and give up.

I suppose theres two ways to look at it....
If I was sitting in my loungeroom with my wife and kids and suddenly a police car in pursuit of a stolen vehicle crashes through my
wall and kills some of us because the driver lost control.....who do I sue...the Government...the knee jerk reaction is to ban chases
altogether...
There was a case recently where the Qld Police aborted a chase and the stolen vehicle crossed the state border into NSW
only to be stopped by tyre spikes...everyone laughed at the Qld Police giving up the chase well before the border...
Apparently they still chase in NSW....not sure...
The disclaimer also protects the Government from law suits for assaults etc if an officer places the cuffs on too tight etc...
Thats why Police leave in droves after realizing the legal implications of the disclaimer....long story....

I know about the spikes, I'm aware.

Regarding chases, laws here are similar, with one conjunction to Australian ones - they don't chase bikers. Only bikers can chase bikers, and biked police is basically non-existent (very rare). Also maybe I'm not taking into account one other thing - that your criminals there in the US are clearly insane. An aftermath of a completely shattered system. My entire life - I never saw a chase, and I only saw one on the TV - once in my life. Murders rarely happen, and even if they do happen, the killer just surrenders 99.9% of the times.

Still I would never support trigger-happy cops on power trips. I don't argue there are good people but most of them suffer from PTSDs and leave the police force to become firefighters or private security advisors. The ones that stay - are the pure psychopaths and sadists who got bullied by their dads and in school.

Another thing I want to mention before I go to bed is this - it's completely not normal to have a pig chase you down because you just drove near a speed camera with 30 km/h over. Here you will never get chased for "over the speed" violation. It's a very perverse system that sends in you in jail for speeding, testing your car, racing, whatever. In Germany and most of Europe, it's even allowed to drive without a speed limit on the Autobahn.

I think your laws need revisement, to become softer, and your criminals need to have perspectives because they never get rehabilitated. Just look at Denmark or Finland for example. They've done a pretty decent job. Their violent criminals become CEOs and their jails are like hotel rooms, with TV, internet, even smartphones and knives.

And Australia just needs to be tougher on deportations and border patrol must be upgraded :bgrin
