RS - they'e got plenty of other entertainment - schoolies isn't essential to experiment with life. I would prefer it was banned because then parents would be pestered about one less thing.

Don't they have front doors to these Units?
He was showing off to his mates. Males take so long to mature - that's if they ever do. He was hoping the topless girl was waiting for him. Maybe being the first one to get to her, he would be in with a chance.

How many parents would give their child permission to attend such a thing given the publicity it gets?
It is expensive.

Parents sometimes feel powerless when their children want something that all their friends have. You know there's danger, but you also don't want them to feel disadvantaged - and as Orchid said - you can't wrap them in cotton wool.

You can't stop teenagers from experimenting with different aspects of life when they get to 17 or 18 as much as you'd like to. What do you say to them - do as I say, not as I did. Many children of my generation left home at 16 and we survived, although there weren't as many temptations as there are today. There was also no welfare, so everyone worked. Kids today have a cushion with a generous youth allowance which probably helps them pay for their entertainment.

All you can do is say a little prayer for their safety and try not to think about what they're doing that they don't tell you about.
Several pages later mantra now thinks...
I totally agree - schoolies should be banned.
Re Mantra changing her tune...
Perhaps she hadn't thought about it along the lines of it being a multimillion dollar scam to exploit and coerce youth into engaging in potentially harmful /dangerous behaviours until I posted the details of the prick (booking agent) behind $choolie$ Week?

Just a thought!

It's now more sinister than just a bunch of under-aged kids and still developing youth heading up the coast or to a foreign country for an end of year party these days, it's become a lucrative multimillion dollar adventure, one CEO Matt Lloyd and others like him are cashing in on at the detriment of our youth.

You've got to ask, what message are we sending our kids when we allow booking agents, companies like this organise their boozey end of year parties?

Kid's will be kid's and there are always going to be boozey end of year parties, this and kids behaving badly and engaging in unsafe behaviours, but it's another thing again to promote it and turn it into a multimillion dollar business.

I think the government should step in and pass legislation to curb socially irresponsible businesses like this.

When it's their kid dangling off a high-rise balcony, they might have second thoughts.

I mean look at the atrocious research stats, re- schoolies arrests, under-age drinking etc.

:nah

Look, Mantra is entitled to change her mind, sometimes you don't realise how harmful things are until someone posts the facts.
Perhaps Mantra wasn't aware of...http://www.schoolies.com/about and many more sites like it being set up to coerce kids into attending potentially harmful week-long boozey after-school parties.

See, the problem is when kids are on holiday, a long way away from their usual, familiar environment, are away from home.. without the usual constraints, ie, adult supervision, (and often for the first time) they tend to cut loose, become disorientated, debased.

What responsibility does CEO Matt Lloyd take for their safety and well being when things go wrong?

Not much, he is just the booking agent afterall, so is not required to do so.

The question is, who is?

Who is taking responsibility for these kids?

And how many more need to fall into harms way before something is done to curb the promotion of schoolies booze week?

Where did I say that Schoolies was a great thing? A lot of parents would be happy if it was banned, but they accept it as part of the end of school entertainment.

I know most of the facts Mel. My son went two years in a row - first as a schoolie - then as a toolie. :roll Obviously it's fantastic revenue for the Gold Coast so it's unlikely to be banned.

And Mantra, never mind Monk, what he spews forth is like water off a ducks back, given I know he's probably suffering with some sort of alcohol related dementia/psychosis, that or is just being your typical abusive drunk down at the pub abusing strangers, people walking by.

I generally ignore these sorts of people in real life situations, so for the better part, do so here also.

Have you yet worked out how someone must have mental issues simply because they refer to an incident which occurred years ago, Roach?

Mantra, Schoolies week has changed since it's more humble beginnings, both when your son would have attended and when I left school also.

It used to be something independently organised by school-leavers themselves, kids, now it's a multimillion dollar industry staffed by adults actively engaging in both the provision of accommodation and endorsement of week long boozey after-parties, spread across numerous on and off-shore holiday locations.

If our government see fit to stuff cigarettes into unsightly and ghoulishly illustrated plain packaging ...to discourage people, (especially our impressionable youth) from smoking, why don't they see fit to stop the endorsement of under-aged binge drinking when it comes to Schoolies week?

Let me tell you why...

Because our politicians aim to please their electorates, and pleasing local business means votes and revenue.

And fines issued by Police related to alcohol laws during boozey schoolies celebrations have raised considerable funds for state governments, particularly at Gold Coast Schoolies, for year over year the policing of these offences has increased and the revenue has increased proportionally.

See, even if these votes are costing lives, this and condoning antisocial behaviours, this and sending our youth a bad message, it's ok, because state government are cashing in.

Now every state government want a piece of the action, this and continue to expand their schoolie venues.

The worse our kids behave, the more revenue for state governments.

It's a win win for them.

So, no advancement on your proposition that anyone who refers to an event which occurred ages ago must have mental issues? Just asking. I want to make certain you have been given every opportunity to explain. I'm sure you are aware, being such a know all.......natural justice demands that you be allowed plenty of time to explain. Had enough time, or do you need more?
