Why are we here?freediver wrote:Why?
Well, because of everything that has gone before.

Can you explain that, Boxy? Freediver?boxy wrote:Why are we here?freediver wrote:Why?

Is it like, what goes around, comes around? Or are "we" wondering whether there is a God out there on Mars?

I'm assuming Freebie want science to tell him why life and us came to be here.Neferti~ wrote:Can you explain that, Boxy? Freediver?boxy wrote:Why are we here?freediver wrote:Why?

Unlike other philosophies, science doesn't just make shit up to fill the gaps. "We don't know" is an entirely scientific answer, "we can't know" is often the only philosophically justifiable answer to many questions.
What we do know about why we are here, is that it took a huge convergence of special circumstances to provide such a paradise for us to inhabit, and for intelligence to evolve to question it's place in the universe. But still, being able to ask that question doesn't make the universe any more "made for us" than it does for one of our gut bacteria or even a planet or some piece of space rock.
I'm wondering if there is life on Mars. I'd suggest if there is/was, we're likely related. Is it like, what goes around, comes around? Or are "we" wondering whether there is a God out there on Mars?

Re: Evolution is not a scientific theory
FD,
Do you consider Chaos theory to be a valid scientific theory?
Do you accept the butterfly effect as a simple example of the importance of the initial state for Chaos theory?

http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Chaos_theory
Then we can get on with debating your point.

Re: Evolution is not a scientific theory
It looks like a mathematical theory to me - something that is true by definition, and useful as a communication and modelling tool in various fields, but by itself it does not reflect any kind of reality. Rather, you pick and choose those aspects of reality that can be conveniently described or modelled by it.

Boxy I am the one trying to clarify what science can and cannot do. What do you think I have been doing all through this thread?
