Weather bureau forecaster Terry Ryan said the widespread impact of Cyclone Yasi had been "unprecedented''.

"Yasi has gone inland, and all the moisture is spreading southwards,'' he said.

"For a (cyclone) system to be so intense, so far inland, is unprecedented.

"We've never seen anything like it in Australia.''

I reckon that Australia might have an extremely cold Winter this year. The Northern Hemisphere has had a bad Winter, so must be our turn, hey

I look forward to some decent snow falling in the suburbs like it did in the 80's.

That would depend on the current La Nina weather system dissipating.
As long as warm water (currently warmest ever known) remains in the South Western Pacific (off OZ east coast) warm and moist conditions should theoretically continue.

TROPICAL Cyclone Carlos has dumped more rain on Darwin in the past 24 hour than Cyclone Yasi inflicted on any town in a single day.

Weather Channel senior meteorologist Dick Whitaker said Darwin recorded a total of 339.6mm of rain during the 24 hours ending at 9am today.

It's been a weird summer here, at least compared to the last decade or so. Quite cool, and even cooler this week.

Wouldn't surprise me at all, if we got a wetter, milder (not colder) winter. All depends on the amount of cloud cover, which has been up a fair amount this year, so far.
