In the 19th century and early 20th century - marrying well meant very little in terms of independence. It wasn't an option. A female had to do what the male wanted whether she liked it or not. Females couldn't vote and even when they inherited their parent's money - they had to hand it over to their husband. He controlled everything if he chose to, which many of them did, because that's how they were raised.
