Quite frankly, I don't think you need much more proof than the amount of moaning that smokers do about the packaging. It's obviously cutting into to the fun factor for them.
I mean, why else would you want to smoke, other than to look cool? It tastes like shit, smells like shit, fucks up your health, and increases your likelyhood of a heap of terminal diseases.
Upsides are few and far between, when you take out the cool little designer packs

Trends in the data show that in comparison with branded packaging, plain packaging increased negative perceptions and feelings about the pack and about smoking. Plain packaging also increased avoidant behaviour (hiding the pack, covering the pack), certain smoking cessation behaviours, such as smoking less around others and forgoing cigarettes, and thinking about quitting. Almost half (n=8) of those in the post-study interview, predominantly women (n=6), reported that the use of plain packs had either increased avoidant behaviour or reduced consumption.
Advantages and Disadvantages of Naturalistic Observation/research .....
http://www.omnilogos.com/2012/03/12/nat ... servation/
..bare in mind, this is only a pilot study, this and the results are quite subjective, this is subject to individual interpretation.
You should have read the article prior to attempting to use it as a source Boxy.
Furthermore..
CONCLUSIONS:
This pilot naturalistic study suggests that plain packaging could potentially help reduce tobacco consumption among some young adult smokers, and women in particular. Employing an innovative research methodology, the findings of this study are consistent with, and indeed support, past plain packaging research.
Gosh, even the author has acknowledged the limitations their own research findings, hence the word
"could" , ...as in
could potentially help reduce tobacco consumption.
This however isn't to say that it "does" and or "Will".... much less
"has".
You moron boxy.

One more time for the boxies...

Again.... you moron boxy
Furthermore, has it crossed your mind why so many young people take up smoking boxy?
Hint: It's not because the box looks cool.

So why do all the smokers get so het up about it? If it doesn't affect you getting your daily nicotine hit, then it doesn't hurt you one little bit.
But it does affect how you behave, doesn't it.
No longer can you proudly plonk down your trendy red, white and blue ciggy box on the table, and not have people turned off by the disgusting reminder of just what you're doing to you body, and to those who have to suffer your second hand smoke.
Such an inconvenience... but it's for you own good, so suck it up

Well as I explained, it annoys me because the quality of my smoking enjoyment has been compromised, given my chosen brand of cigarette (Dunhill blues) no longer has the re-sealable freshness foil packaging, and despite this, I still pay the same price for an inferior (to what it was) product.
You see Boxy, given I only smoke a few a day, if that.. they go stale on me, hence I preferred the freshness seal packaging because it was like opening a fresh packet of smokes everyday.
Who wins?
The cigarette companies.
Thats about it.

I guess it depends on what tobacco company, re- the cheaper production cost savings.

Looks like it's working just like the research suggested
... plain packaging increased negative perceptions and feelings about the pack and about smoking...
