Turnbull projecting Keating? C'mon! They're both anti-American and don't want US forces on our soil period so what would you expect them to say?
The agreement allows the US and the UK to operate their own nuclear powered submarines in Australia and to expand their bases and forces here. Australia is a strategic ally for both. Without Australia how else are they going to deter China's aggression in the western Pacific? I doubt they're likely to renege on the deal.
Some homework for you ...

dear BO,
many blessings.
Look at the actual cost of the subs that the Yanks pay:
https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Virginia-class_submarine
Planned cost: about US$1.65 billion each (based on FY95 dollars, 30-boat class and two boat/year build-rate)
Actual cost: US$1.5 billion (in 1994 prices), US$2.6 billion (in 2012 prices)[108][109]
Annual operating cost: $50 million per unit (in 2012 prices)
Let's say that the cost is
A$5 billion each.
We're paying $368 billion for 8 subs.
368/8 =
$46 billion each which is about 9 times the price that we should be paying.
I know - yes -
we will get submarine manufacturing Australian locations in the deal but still -
why should we pay 9 times the price?

I was responding to your claim that we wouldn't get them.

Major part of the deal is AUKUS membership.
Is there anywhere we can get a deal like that cheaper?

I'm sure we'll get them. Being situated where we are we're a strategic asset to both the UK and the US. They can't fight China from where they are situated.

The real political sabotage is in housing. I was watching the news tonight and in one segment they're saying that younger Australians have little to no chance of ever owning their own home. That's if any 'homes' are even left as they're all being leveled for high rise.
A couple of segments later they had on some Chinese real estate agents (terrible 'English') saying how they have many billions of dollars from Chinese and Singaporean buyers ready to splash in the housing market in Sydney and Melbourne. BTW the majority of RE agents in Sydney are Chinese because that's where the market is.
What's that going to do? Make the market ridiculously higher than it already is.
We're going to need those submarines.
Both sides of government are guilty. Foreign ownership needs to be quelled.

Foreign owners pay higher Stamp duty and land taxes - that's all.

Maybe but the fact we are paying 9 times the price is the elephant in the room
that no one dares to talk about.

That's all? So you are ok with it? Sell us out for a few more dollars? I'm stunned.
