Do you have a recipe for this dish, Lisa?lisa jones wrote:
My Greek neighbour ( I may have mentioned her over yonder.. she's the one from Sparta who just turns up and picks whatever she likes from my garden lol )...just dropped off a large oven pan of freshly cooked yemista. She thanked me for all the free veges whilst at it.
It looks exactly like the pic above..except there's twice as much of it.
Must say.. it took me by surprise. There you go....

Re: Food
What's on your Menu for Dinner tonight?
I am not sure what I will have. However, I have a packet of these in the freezer and usually have them with potatoes done in Alfoil, served with sour cream and some fresh green vegies (beans, brocchili or something).
PS. These don't taste like cardboard either.
Oh, I don't always go to the freezer to get something out for Dinner. Now that Winter is on its way, I will start making casseroles and other stuff.

I don't touch chicken in cardboard boxes. The last time I did - Inghams Chicken Tenders - I got half way through the box and found a lump of something that looked like faeces, whether human or chicken - I wouldn't have a clue, but it turned me off for life. Making a fresh chicken schnitzel only takes a few short minutes and you know exactly what you're eating.Neferti~ wrote:PS. These don't taste like cardboard either.

Sorry to turn people off prepacked and preserved food, but you can't trust it.

No, Mantra, you won't turn people off because of the "convenience" of pre-packed frozen food, especially for somebody like myself who lives alone. It would be irresponsible of me to buy too much "fresh food" and throw much of it away, wouldn't it? Unlike some people, I do not have a proper "freezer", just the top of my Whirlpool which really doesn't hold that much and certainly not "leftovers".mantra wrote:I don't touch chicken in cardboard boxes. If you found something untoward in a package, you should have reported it to the 1800 number for that manufacturer. Things do slip through the stringent quality control and they NEED to know about it.

Re: Food
I buy fresh food twice a week - and I don't like throwing out food either, so I try to be practical, although not always. You don't need much space. I have a tiny freezer too. If I see some nice slices of beef - I'll buy a kg or so and cut it into a few portions and freeze it. I'll throw all the leftover vegetables into a stew or soup. Potatoes and carrots keep for a while if they're stored properly and I generally use frozen peas and beans. Fresh beans don't keep for long. Even though I don't buy frozen meals - I use tinned products like pineapple, tuna, salmon, beetroot etc.Neferti~ wrote:No, Mantra, you won't turn people off because of the "convenience" of pre-packed frozen food, especially for somebody like myself who lives alone. I used to always complain about problem products, but there are so many of them - you don't know where to start. There is no stringent quality control now. There is so much imported garbage which is repackaged here - even if you get a replacement product, it's not going to be any better than the one you complained about. I could spend all day on the phone complaining about poor quality products, but there are easier things to do. I just don't buy it again and look for an alternative. If you found something untoward in a package, you should have reported it to the 1800 number for that manufacturer. Re: Food
I complained recently about my son finding a wormy/maggoty thing in his health bar but what will they do? Send out more? I don't think he will ever eat another one so it would just be a waste.
I hate wasting food and would waste a lot less if I lived alone. I buy things that the kids like but they don't always get eaten so then I cut down for awhile.
I rarely use packaged food and apportion the chicken, meat, fish etc into the portions I will need. I always make my own chicken schnitzels etc and it doesn't take much room to store chicken breasts, steak, fish. Just don't put them into the freezer in blobs. I repackage steak if I buy it from Coles and take it out of those bulky plastic trays. Chicken breasts and fish store easily by packaging them individually and mince can be flattened out.
You can store many many more times the amount of fresh food in the freezer than you can items in bulky packaging. It just takes a few minutes of thought and time.
