Birds are dirty animals and Australian birds are by far the most aggressive I have ever seen.

Last year I went to St. Augustine, Florida which is the oldest city in North American so it has some charm (Florida is a state with little charm at all so that is saying a lot). Last time I was in Perth it seemed that they were behind the rest of AUS in extending store hours but that isn't something I really keep up with ... American stores used to close down but it seems everything is open most all the time now ... Sunday liquor/beer/wine sales have just become a reality in a few places here in Georgia so things are still changing here as well ...
I have never been to Perth but is is a place I always wanted to visit. No real reason to go there, unfortunately. I have met several Perth people and they seem to be more softly spoken than the East Coast people. I doubt that Perth is, in any way, behind the East Coast of Oz.

We had 24/7 trading here in Canberra a while back ......... nobody feels like shopping for their weekly groceries at 2 AM. So that didn't last long. :rofl

There are, as I said, TWO DAYS in the year when you can NOT buy alcohol or ciggies (or get petrol) .......... Christmas Day and Good Friday .....

I loved the outdoor vending machines in Japan that dispensed beer and cigarettes (back when I used to smoke a little). And the 24/7 convenience stores everywhere.

I scare the shit out of POMs with my real life experiences with animals in australia. What I thought was normal is not apparently.

Watching for snakes ..etc when going for a bush walk.
Scanning ahead when driving for animal on the side of the road that may jump out.
Magpies attacks.
Funnelweb spiders jump out of their holes when you throw rock into them and the are so pissed off they attack.
Coral sratches that don't heal.
Mossies that carry you away.

And don't forget the dropbears... the provide the most fun closel followed by bunyips.

Well if you MUST hang clothes on the outdoor line and then put birdseed in the feeder, obviously, birds are not "house trained". I have never had a problem with bird poop. Nor do I hang clothes on the line very often.

Can you remember these Aussie birds?

It is an odd thing to see brightly colored Australian birds after living in countries where most birds are rather drab looking.

These are just the "common" ones. They visit me every other day.

A Canadian epal introduced me to a guy he knew some many years back in the 1990s. My epal was a former Editor, since retired (now passed on). His former colleague had connections to Canberra. He was a journalist and had migrated to Canada back in the 70's. I asked this guy, Duncan, what he missed about Australia (remember he had left here in the 70's) and he said the smell of gum trees and the call of the Magpie.

Speaking of deadly Australian creatures.... I was hanging some washing out yesterday when I bent down to pick a couple of pegs up out of the peg basket when out the corner of my eye, I saw a black medium sized spider crawling out from between where my parents stack/store their wood kindling for the BBQ, about a foot from where I was standing. Although it was black and shiny this and looked to be what I thought to be a funnel-web spider, I dismissed it thinking it may have been a bit too small to be a Sydney funnel-web, given I have come across one once before when I was a child which was much bigger, well, it seemed to be when I accidentally rested my hand up against it whilst leaning on a brick wall waiting for my neighbour to answer her door.
.....I screamed.......our neighbour killed it..... and it was identified as being a funnelweb.

Anyway, after a quick google tonight (this thread reminded me that I should probably look it up to see what spider it might have been) it came to my attention that it most certainly was a Sydney funnel-web, without a doubt, this and was most likely a male too, of which is smaller though carries the more lethal venom of the two. Apparently we live in the shire most prone to funnel-web spiders in Sydney, (Yes, I have moved back to Sydney for those wondering) ..... though for those of you who live in the Blue Mountains, be aware that both the male and female bite of a blue mountains funnel-web spider is fatal, unlike the Sydney Funnel-web whereby only the males venom will kill you, though a female will make you very very sick still.

So, just be careful this summer guys, they're definitely out and about, seemingly out in force, though I must say, I hadn't seen one for years until just recently, perhaps it's a bad year for them or something.
