Hygiene & manners for migrants

Post by mantra » Tue Jan 10, 2012 10:42 am

These are such simple issues, but many migrants (and some Aussies) have terrible hygiene and bad manners. The opposition spokeswoman for Citizenship in Qld has spoken out that we need to advise migrants to wear deodorant and to not push in front of others in queues.

You have to wonder why no-one has addressed these problems before. Perhaps more tolerance might have been developed over the past century if they had.

Maybe some people will be offended - but better the minority offended, than the majority.
MIGRANTS should be taught about the importance of wearing deodorant and waiting in queues without pushing in, the Federal Opposition says.

Cultural awareness training should also be given by employers bringing skilled migrants into Australia under the 457 visa program, the coalition's citizenship spokeswoman Teresa Gambaro told The Australian (subscriber link).

In an interview with the newspaper, Ms Gambaro said she was concerned about new migrants on work visas not integrating into the community because Australia had failed to teach them about cultural issues related to health, hygiene and lifestyle.

"Without trying to be offensive, we are talking about hygiene and what is an acceptable norm in this country when you are working closely with other co-workers," she said.

Wearing deodorant and waiting in line politely were about "teaching what are norms in Australia".

The MP for Brisbane said while her comments may upset people, migrants also needed to be educated about their rights and how to improve their chances of getting work.

I just read that and there is a poll on Yahoo news page asking whether we should have cultural awareness for migrants. Surprisingly (or not) 45% have voted - NO

I was still at school when multiculturalism was introduced. We had people from the immigration department come to visit us to advise how we were to treat all the new migrants coming to Australia. We were taught how to be politically correct and culturally sensitive. In the 70's - Australia was still predominantly caucasian and the idea of Australia being flooded with various ethnic groups could almost be likened to an alien invasion - but most of us learnt tolerance, at least superficially.

The last 20 years have been different of course - kids have grown up in multicultural schools and just take the diversity of their classmates for granted, although the survey seems to indicate otherwise.

Not sure how accurate this is but also mentioned on the ABC program today covering this topic was:
1) Queue jumping, and how it was acceptable for some migrants especially from Italy to simply push in in front of someone who has a trolley load when they have 1 or 2 items. No need to ask simply jump in front. Imagine if a family of 5-10 each with 1-2 items did that!

2) That some migrants who come from countries where water is valued much more highly simply don't 'waste' water for personal washing. And still don't use any deoderant.
Hope that they wash after the toilet though or do they simply pick their teeth to cover that.
Have also heard that this applies to aborigines.
Maybe they haven't heard of dysentery or diptheria!

3) That some migrants from asian countries have holes in the ground as a toilet. As such they are used to squatting for their business. So when they see a toilet they stand up on the seat and squat, they don't know that the toilet is designed for sitting. So don't be surprised to see signs being introduced "Sit for a Sht".
The program also mentioned the numerous accidents that have occurred from standing on toilet seats.

It comes down to poor social integration, and for this we can blame ourselves and the governments we elect for not forcing them to assimilate.

Most Australianised Italians (even the elderly who are 1st generation) this and don't push in..., in fact, Italians are among my preferred immigrants, they brought with them their culture, their appreciation and love of the the family, their nonnas, and their food.

Also, more Italians than not vote Liberal these days, in stark contrast to their humble working class Labor beginnings, given they have successfully integrated, and why?

Because they were happy to call themselves Australian, accept our Australian laws , though at the same time, have succeeded in preserving their cultural identity.

Its simple. when in Rome do as the Romans do. It comes down to respect.

If any minority group needs a worked example of successful integration, then this is probably our best, along with our Greek communities who worked hard and gave so much back to the countries they immigrated to.

Unlike our European Zionist Jews, soviets, multi-nationalists, temporary EU Green work/Study visas, or those who queue jump... they didn't arrive with an agenda ...they did not cry victim-mouth this or think the the world owes them a living...their intention was to form part of a working society, and that's exactly what they did.

So many either want to suckle on the public tit...bludge or are here to take large wads of cash back to Europe with them after the GFC is sorted. As soon as Libs come back in, watch all the UK.EU CEO's and Gillard panellists, review boards chairs scurry back home...taking their earnings with them.
