Perhaps they did. However, there's some interesting science to support it.
For example if you overfeed male mice and mate them with lean females and then remove the male, the offspring will be at increased risk of insulin resistance and diabetes over identical control mice with lean fathers. This flies in the face of Mendelian genetic inheritance, but probably represents some sort of epigenetic modification in the sperm that isn't yet understood.
Mattus,
Hi! I was being facetious, and noting that often articles such as that are usually "light weight" and thrown at some kid in the "pool" to get stressed about. Editors are renown for being "monsters".
Sure, scientific experiments come into it.
I don't
need scientific experiments to prove that people get FAT because they eat more than they should. When did 2500 calories a DAY replace the norm of 1200 for the average person? If you are taller you need more Maccas?
We worried about people smoking, getting sick and draining the Health system pot of (taxation) "funds", now we have the obese, who mostly are still quite young, but, believe me, in 20 years there will be an even larger problem and an even more drain on the Health system and the GPs we know today will all be retired.
How many new GPs are we educating?
Australia is not The Lucky Country, at all. We are catching up to the USA and Britain with all the
bad stuff at a faster rate than expected. Downunder is no longer a Haven of Slim, Suntanned, Happy people without additions (except the beer drinking and Aussie Rules), we are now competing with the World and, typically, if us Aussies do NOT win we get glum ..... so we are still competing to have the fattest people, the most diabetic little kids, the diseases that were stamped out decades ago to reappear because it is our "choice" to not immunise our babies in case they become "whatever" (Autistic?) and lots of other things that I am sure somebody will remind me of.
It is actually nice to be of the Older Generation at times as one has heard all this stuff before, many times and tried to change it, been defeated by "government".
Sorry, Mattus, (and others reading this) got a little carried away there ........ but ......... carry on!
PS I have read about Mendelian inheritance. We are
all prone to this problem ........ inherited genes. Mendel didn't discover a FAT gene. It is caused by eating too much.
