Both my children were 7lb 6 oz and 7lb 10 oz respectively. Throughout their childhood I didn't make them finish their meals - they ate only what they needed and didn't have salt on their food. They played outside much of the time. They didn't know what MacDonalds was until my son was 6 and went to a party there. Both of them to this day will rarely eat rubbish although my daughter likes chocolate. My son doesn't touch sugar or salt. They are both perfect physical specimens (I think so anyway).
You see kids in their strollers eating chips, lollies and sucking on a bottle of cordial. It is child abuse. By about 4 or 5 they start to get big stomachs and by the time they're 13 - they already have early onset diabetes.
In another decade or so the medical costs to treat these kids will be astronomical. It doesn't take much to improve their health - a heavy tax on junk food and any product containing trans fatty acids should be outlawed as it is in parts of Europe - although I'm not sure about the US. It should also be mandatory that all kids do a sport or physical activity of some kind - even if it means including it in the school curriculum. These days sport is optional in high school, although I'm not sure about primary school. It needs to become compulsory in kindergarten. The additional cost now will be a saving in the future.
