News papers and snail mail

In a discussion recently it occured to all that we no longer buy news papers (very rarely buy the Sunday papers) and never right a snall mail letter except to send a xmas card.

I stay in contact with everyone by email. Use Skype to see relatives and have just started to use facebook in a very small way.

Since most of you here are net savy and surf a bit i expect. Has your behaviour change much over the last few years?

Like candles and fireplaces, we don't really need snail mail and print media but like fire it is written into our DNA. I see them becoming luxury items. Is there anything finer than me sitting in front of my fireplace with candles lit on a cold night?

I still buy newspapers because the online stuff isn't up to date or doesn't cover the relevance for my area.

The left are too busy making paper machete Gaia dolls from the Age and the SMH while copiously masturbating on them and simultaneously spitting venomously on the Australian and any other publication that doesn't tow their weird arsed political invective. In variably, the name of Murdoch is called out on completion of their lacklustre vinegar shot in the hope that their effort will envisage some kind of naziesque shutdown of the free media

Anyway... I was never a big consumer of "hardcopy" media, so, no, I'm not changing. Most of my media is virtual. I do read local rags, though.

Cleaning through the paper work i have at home it become clear we are a long way from a paperless society.

I am sure I have more paper coming in and out the the house even though i don't buy the newpaper. More bills. More letter drops. More and more....


More packaging... now that is one I have noticed. My bin is just full of food packaging.

Definitely I read the world and local news on line. Send emails and ecards. Use social networking such as Facebook and Skype. Get most of my work through emails, when working. I shop and bank on-line... yadda yadda As the internet increases its functionality, so to do I explore new options. Lots of interesting sociological speculation out there about this brave new evolution... any one heard any?

But still, there is something to be said for AiA's point about print being a luxury, which is exactly why I subscribe to 4 print journals. I love getting them through the mail... makes for a nice alternative to bills.

I agree SN. Considering there are so many businesses who are "paperless" now and most of us have email accounts - why do we still receive so much paper in the mail? We're drowning in paper from a multitude of organisations.

If we didn't import so much rubbish - we wouldn't have to deal with excessive packaging.

I rarely buy newspapers, but when I do I keep them for lighting fires at my block. I don't read junkmail but save it for fire lighting.
Yesterday I discovered 2 X 4 litre icecream containers housing 20 odd years of photos, within a plastic bin, full of water. Every single photo is destroyed.
I'd imagined something like that would really p*$$ me off, but I just said "Ah well they're phuked".
Spoze when they dry out I can start fires with them.
