Lithuanian bog mystery

Post by tllwd » Tue Apr 01, 2025 2:38 pm

VILNIUS, Lithuania (AP) — Three of the U.S. Army soldiers who went missing in Lithuania have been found dead in their armored vehicle that was pulled from a swampy area early Monday, according to U.S. Army Europe and Africa Command. Another soldier is still missing.

The bodies of the three soldiers were recovered after a massive six-day effort by U.S., Polish and Lithuanian armed forces and authorities to dig the M88 Hercules vehicle out of a peat bog at the expansive General Silvestras Žukauskas training ground in the town of Pabradė.

Another soldier is still missing.

A US citizen has been detained at a railway station in Belarus, according to the Belarusian state news agency BelTA, which cited the State Customs Committee.

The individual was apprehended by customs officers at the Maladzyechna railway station while traveling from Lithuania. According to officials, the man was discovered alone in an empty train carriage on a route from Kena, Lithuania, to Maladzyechna and was subsequently handed over to Belarusian border guards for further investigation.

The Belarusian authorities have not provided additional details regarding the circumstances of the detention or the identity of the individual.

This incident comes as the search continues for a missing US soldier near the Belarusian border. On March 31, the US Army confirmed that three soldiers from the 1st Armored Brigade Combat Team, 3rd Infantry Division, who had been missing during exercises near Pabrade, Lithuania, were found dead. The recovery of a fourth missing soldier remains ongoing.

Have we heard any more about the missing US soldier?
And has the mystery of the American found in Belarus been solved? Do we know who he is?

A 27-year-old US citizen was detained at the train station in Maladzyechna for illegally crossing the border from Lithuania into Belarus. Customs services took action following his arrival in an empty freight car.

What do you need to know?
Where was the detention? The 27-year-old American was detained at the train station in Maladzyechna, in central Belarus.
Why was he detained? The man illegally crossed the border from Lithuania into Belarus by traveling in an empty freight train car.
What will happen next to the detainee? After facing administrative charges, the American will be deported to Lithuania.

Zerkalo reported that the American had tried twice to enter Belarus on March 24 but was denied entry. The reason was his inability to prove he had sufficient funds to stay in the country. Lithuanian border guards confirmed that the US citizen had legally resided in Lithuania for several weeks.

The Lithuanian border guard assured that the detained American is not in any way connected to the training ground accident in Pabradė, where three American soldiers died. One US soldier is still missing.

At the moment all of it is clear as mud in the Lithuanian swamp.
I read an opinion on some military oriented forums that the American in Belarus was either commander of the vehicle or driver and therefor responsible for the accident and tried to escape court-martial.
