That bloody dangerous fructose

Post by Jovial Monk » Mon Jul 13, 2009 10:31 am

Happened to listen a fair bit on the radio yesterday, to/from Farmer's Market and to/from the Trial which was over an hour drive each way.

Listened to a lawyer (the science has already been done, remember "Pure, White & Deadly"?) Fructose is the reason for the obesity epidemic, plus nutritionists getting things very wrong. Nutritionists guessed eating fat made you fat. Nope. Eating cane sugar, eating high fructose corn syrups made you fat. Partly at least by not triggering the appetite control mechanisms of the body.

You don't think you eat high-fructose cornsyrups? You probably do if you drink commercial bottled fruit juice. No added sugar just means no added cane sugar! A high fructose corn syrup is not cane syrup, deriving as it does from corn, tapioca or wheat (any cheap source of starch lying around.) Fruit also contains fructose: you will not get slim by eating lots of fruit! Other sources of fructose:

-cane sugar and bakery lines like buns etc that contain sugar
-sugary breakfast cereal. (Eat muesli, unsweetened or Wheat Bix which contains malt extract, a source of sugar but only in the form of glucose, etc)
-most chocolate, candy and boy have sales of these soared in the last few decades, accompanied by the obesity epidemic

I have a few customers who come in and buy a can of liquid malt extract and put it on their muesli and use it for other sweetening uses, they don't brew. Not really stupid these people! Malt extract (and beer, well, real beer) is quite nutritious with proteins, minerals and vitamins etc besides the glucose-based sugars, mostly in the form of maltose, two glucose molecules joined together but some of these sugars can have up to twelve glucose molecules joined in a chain (dextrines in brewerspeak.)

Heh, the lawyer had a bit of fun at joggers' expense, the nutritionists' advice to avoid fat and exercise being an educated guess that was quite wrong :)

What can we do about it? Personally and in your family, eat bacon & eggs for breakfast not sweetened cereal! Don't buy low cocoa butter, high cane sugar chocolate (no Cadbury's or Nestle or Mars Bar.) The lawyer reckoned that politicians would not have the willpower to outlaw fructose enhanced foodstuffs, that the best we can hope for is fructose content being put on labels.

What do you think?
